Chapter 3 - The Shadow Over BrooklynThe night air over the Brooklyn docks was bitter, thick with the smell of saltwater, diesel exhaust, and wet rust.

Lydia sat in the passenger seat of Matteo’s armored SUV, her hands clamped tightly in her lap. She hadn't stayed in the library. When Matteo had tried to leave her behind, she had pointed out a critical detail: the shipping manifest for the hijacked Brooklyn pier was directly linked to the Zurich gold account she had just uncovered.
"If you go in there without me," she had told him in the foyer, "your enforcers will destroy the hard drives before you can prove who authorized the seizure. You need me to secure the data."
Matteo had glared at her for three long seconds before grabbing a spare Kevlar vest, tossing it at her chest, and growling, "If you get shot, I'm doubling your father's debt."
Now, they were parked in the shadows behind Warehouse 14. Outside, six of Matteo’s heavily armed men moved quietly through the rain, their weapons drawn.
"You stay in the car with Marco," Matteo commanded, checking the chamber of his heavy handgun with practiced ease. "The second I clear the office, Marco will bring you in to pull the drive."
"Matteo," Lydia said, her voice stopping him just as his hand touched the door handle.
He turned to look at her in the dim dashboard light.
"Be careful," she said softly.
Matteo looked at her for a long second. A small, dark smile touched his lips. "They should be careful of me, Lydia."
He stepped out into the pouring rain, shutting the door quietly behind him.
Inside Warehouse 14, the air was cold and filled with the echo of dripping water. Massive shipping containers were stacked three high, creating a maze of dark corridors.
In the central office overlooking the pier floor, three men stood around a steel desk, desperately pulling hard drives from server racks. Standing at the center was Dominick Rossi—the older brother of Augustus Rossi, the man whose knees Matteo had broken the day before.
"Hurry up!" Dominick barked at his tech guy. "Vance’s auditor found the Zurich account! We wipe these drives now or we all end up in a shallow grave in Jersey!"
"You're a little late for wiping drives, Dominick," a voice rang out from the shadows near the doorway.
Dominick spun around, pulling his weapon, but a single shot rang out through the warehouse. The gun was blasted out of Dominick’s hand, spinning across the concrete floor.
Matteo stepped out of the shadows, his expression utterly void of emotion. Behind him, his men instantly disarmed the other two enforcers, pinning them face-down against the cold floor.
"Matteo..." Dominick stammered, backing up against the server rack, his hands raised, blood dripping from his shattered fingers. "Listen to me... it wasn't my idea! It was the syndicate board! They wanted to cut your margins!"
"You stole from my house," Matteo said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he stepped into the light. "You used Augustus to set up George Dawson, knowing his daughter was an accountant. You planned to force her to audit my books to cover your tracks."
Matteo walked up to Dominick, looking down at him like an insect.
"You thought she was a weak link," Matteo murmured. "You thought she was just a helpless girl in a yellow sweater."
Down on the pier, Lydia couldn't wait any longer. Hearing the single gunshot echoed through the metal walls, her heart had leapt into her throat. Ignoring Marco’s loud protests, she pushed the SUV door open and ran into the rain toward the warehouse entrance.
"Miss Dawson! Wait!" Marco shouted, sprinting behind her.
Lydia burst through the heavy side door of the warehouse, her sneakers slipping on the wet concrete. She ran up the metal staircase leading to the office, her eyes searching frantically for Matteo.
She reached the top landing just as Dominick, in a desperate bid to escape, lunged toward a hidden emergency panel on the wall, reaching for a secondary weapon hidden beneath the desk.
"Matteo! On your right!" Lydia screamed.
Matteo reacted instantly. He didn't even look back; he spun, grabbing Dominick by the throat and slamming him violently against the metal wall, pinning him completely.
The warehouse fell into a heavy, echoing silence.
Matteo held Dominick by the throat, his eyes burning with lethal intent. But then his gaze flicked toward the doorway—and saw Lydia standing there, breathing heavily, wet from the rain, her eyes wide with terror and concern for him.
Matteo looked down at the man in his grip, then at the woman standing at the door.
Slowly, deliberately, Matteo eased his grip. He didn't kill Dominick. Instead, he threw him brutally to the floor at Marco’s feet.
"Zip-tie him," Matteo ordered Marco smoothly. "Federal authorities will be getting an anonymous tip about the gold bullion in Zurich tomorrow morning. Let the feds deal with the Rossi family."
Marco blinked in absolute shock. In all his fifteen years working for Matteo Vance, he had never seen the boss spare a traitor’s life.
Matteo turned away from his men and walked over to Lydia. He reached out, his big hands taking her wet face gently in his palms, looking for any sign of injury.
"I told you to stay in the car," he said, his voice raspy, but lacking any real anger.
"You're an idiot," Lydia gasped, tears mixing with the rainwater on her cheeks. "He was reaching for a gun!"
May you like
"And you ran into a gunfight in a pair of sneakers," Matteo replied softly, his thumbs gently wiping the rainwater from her cheekbones. "You really are the most troublesome accountant I've ever hired."
Lydia looked into his dark eyes, feeling the heat of his hands against her skin, and realized something terrifying. She wasn't afraid of Matteo Vance anymore. She was falling for him.
