Chapter 6 - A Songbird's Sanctuary

Two months later.

May had arrived in New York, bringing with it brilliant sunshine, warm gentle breezes, and skies of breathtaking, pale blue.

The Moretti estate had been completely transformed.

The tall gray stone walls were now draped in blooming white roses and green ivy. The dark, intimidating grounds had been upgraded with a massive, hand-built wooden playground featuring swings, slides, and a custom playhouse shaped like a fairytale castle.

In the sunlit garden lounge, Rose sat in a plush armchair, wrapped in a light woolen blanket. Her skin was healthy, her cheeks possessed a warm pink flush, and her laughter rang softly through the quiet afternoon air. Beside her sat Dr. Giuliano, checking her blood pressure with a satisfied smile.

On the manicured lawn, three-year-old Annie was running through the grass in a bright yellow sundress and soft leather shoes. She was chasing a golden retriever puppy that Alessandro had bought her three weeks ago. Her dark curls bounced in the sunlight, and her rich, joyous laughter echoed off the high stone walls.

Alessandro sat at a wrought-iron garden table nearby.

He wore a simple linen shirt, his sleeves rolled up, a cup of espresso resting beside a stack of legal documents. The dark, terrifying lines etched into his face had softened. The cold, lifeless void in his eyes was gone, replaced by a deep, unshakeable warmth.

Marco walked across the lawn, holding a leather folder. He set it down beside Alessandro’s cup.

“The Falcone territories have been completely absorbed, Boss,” Marco reported quietly, a soft smile touching his lips as he watched Annie play. “The remaining families have signed the peace accord. No one will ever challenge the Moretti name again. You hold the East Coast outright.”

Alessandro didn't look at the financial reports in the folder. He didn't care about the territories or the millions flowing into his accounts.

He was watching his daughter.

“How is the foundation coming along?” Alessandro asked.

“The Elena Vance Moretti Children’s Hospital in Brooklyn opens next month,” Marco answered proudly. “Every child from 4th Avenue will receive free medical care, housing assistance, and education for life.”

“Good,” Alessandro nodded softly. “Ensure Rose’s old apartment building on 4th Avenue is bought and renovated into a community shelter. I never want to see another child standing in the rain outside a pharmacy.”

“It’s already done, Don Alessandro.” Marco bowed slightly and stepped back toward the main house to give his boss privacy.

Annie came running across the lawn, her small leather shoes tapping happily against the stone path. The golden retriever puppy trotted clumsily behind her.

She stopped beside Alessandro’s chair, panted happily, and climbed right onto his lap.

Alessandro caught her effortlessly, pulling her small body against his chest, burying his face in her warm, sweet-scented hair.

“Daddy,” Annie said, her small fingers reaching up to touch the silver songbird pendant resting against her own neck. “Look! The bird is singing!”

Alessandro looked up at the large oak tree in the center of the garden. Sitting on a high branch was a small, wild songbird, pouring its heart out in a sweet, clear melody that filled the afternoon air.

Alessandro wrapped his large arms securely around his daughter—his blood, his light, his salvation. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, framed photograph of Elena, setting it gently on the table beside them so her sweet, smiling eyes could watch over their garden.

“She hears it too, Annie,” Alessandro whispered softly, kissing his daughter’s cheek as the warm spring sun bathed them in golden light. “Your mother hears it too.”

Annie leaned her head back against his chest, her small hand wrapping tightly around her father’s thumb.

She was no longer cold. She was no longer hungry. She was no longer hiding behind a flaking blue door.

She was home, held in the arms of the most dangerous man in New York—a man who would burn the world to keep her safe, and who would spend the rest of his days ensuring his little songbird never walked alone in the rain again.
