Chapter 5 - The Siege of Pinecrest HeightsSpencer stood at the top of the grand staircase, his weapon trained directly on Arthur Vance's chest. Below, the two mercenaries holding Gideon kept their rifles aimed at Spencer.

"Put the gun down, Spencer," Vance said calmly, adjusting his silk tie as if he were attending a board meeting rather than orchestrating a massacre. "If you pull that trigger, my men will put a dozen rounds through your head before I even hit the floor. And then they'll spend the next ten minutes breaking down that panic room door in the east wing."
Spencer’s eyes burned with lethal hatred, but his hand remained rock-steady. "You ruined your life for money, Arthur. You served my family for thirty years."
"Served your family?!" Vance let out a cruel, bitter laugh that echoed off the high marble ceilings. "I built your family's empire, Spencer! Your father was a ruthless, arrogant drunk who took credit for every corporate acquisition I structured! I made him billions! And what did he leave me in his will? A trustee fee! A pathetic percentage!"
"So you orchestrated a plot to steal the entire trust," Spencer said, keeping his voice dead calm, buying every second he could.
"I didn't have to orchestrate much," Vance sneered. "When your father died, I realized that if you died without an heir by your forty-fifth birthday, the entire three-billion-dollar portfolio reverted to the executors. I had it all planned. I was sixty days away from claiming what was rightfully mine!"
Vance took a step up the staircase, his face contorting with rage. "And then Florence Hayes mailed that letter revealing her granddaughter's existence. And Dr. Ortiz brought your illegitimate son into the world! Two biological heirs appearing out of nowhere to strip me of my fortune!"
"Charlee is a seven-year-old child!" Spencer growled. "Dexter is a newborn baby!"
"They are obstacles!" Vance spat. "I offered that mercenary ten thousand dollars to dump the baby in the river. The fool got cold feet and left him near your dumpsters! And then Charlee brought him right to your door like a sick twisted joke of fate!"
"It wasn't a joke of fate, Arthur," Spencer said softly. "It was justice."
Vance’s face darkened. He raised his silenced pistol, aiming it directly at Spencer's face. "Drop the weapon, Spencer. Now. Or I order my men to execute your security contractor right here."
Gideon, blood trickling down his temple, looked up at Spencer and shook his head slightly—a silent warning not to give up his leverage.
Spencer looked down at Vance, then at Gideon, and slowly began to lower his pistol toward the floor.
"That's it," Vance smirked, taking another step up the stairs. "Smart boy. Just like your father—"
CLANG!
From the dark upper corridor behind Vance, a heavy iron wall sconce suddenly swung loose, plunging down from the ceiling like a pendulum!
Mrs. Mabel had released the old laundry-chute counterweight from the third-floor service closet!
The heavy iron fixture struck one of the mercenaries holding Gideon squarely in the back, sending him crashing down the marble stairs.
In that split second of total chaos, Gideon didn't hesitate. He slammed his elbow backward into the second mercenary's jaw, threw his weight forward, and tackled Arthur Vance over the marble railing!
BOOM!
Vance and Gideon crashed onto the hardwood floor of the lower parlor in a tangle of limbs and shattered furniture. Vance’s pistol skidded across the floor, sliding straight under the grand piano.
Spencer vaulted over the balcony railing, landing on the ground floor with a heavy thud.
The remaining mercenary scrambled to raise his rifle, but Spencer drove his shoulder into the man's chest, slamming him against the stone fireplace. They grappled violently in the dark, the mercenary trying to draw his sidearm while Spencer pinned his arm against the mantle.
With a surge of raw, desperate strength, Spencer grabbed a heavy brass poker from the fireplace stand and swung it with all his body weight!
The blow struck the mercenary's tactical helmet, knocking him unconscious instantly. He collapsed onto the rug like a lead weight.
Spencer turned around, his chest heaving, his eyes scanning the dark parlor.
Across the room, Arthur Vance was dragging himself across the floor toward the grand piano, his hand reaching frantically for his fallen pistol.
Gideon was struggling to get up, groaning in pain from a dislocated shoulder suffered during the fall.
Spencer walked slowly across the room. He picked up the heavy brass poker, his footsteps echoing cold and deliberate against the hardwood.
Vance’s fingers touched the grip of the gun. "I... I'll kill you..." he gasped, turning onto his back, his face covered in bruises and dust.
Before Vance could raise the weapon, Spencer stepped down hard on Vance’s wrist!
CRACK!
Vance screamed in agony as his wrist fractured under Spencer's boot. The gun slipped from his fingers, rolling harmlessly away.
Spencer knelt down over his father's former attorney. He grabbed Vance by his silk lapels, lifting him off the floor until they were nose-to-nose.
"You threatened my niece," Spencer whispered, his voice a freezing wind from the depths of hell. "You tried to murder my son. And you brought violence into my home."
"Spencer... please..." Vance sobbed, terror finally shattering his arrogant mask. "We can make a deal... the money... I'll give you control of the offshore accounts... please!"
"My family isn't for sale, Arthur," Spencer said coldly.
Spencer slammed his fist into Vance's jaw, knocking the traitor completely unconscious.
Five minutes later, the high-pitched wail of police sirens echoed through the storm outside.
Red and blue emergency lights flashed through the shattered windows of the Warren estate as a dozen state police cruisers and federal vehicles roared up the winding driveway.
Casey, the child welfare worker, burst through the front doors accompanied by six armed federal marshals. She froze in shock, taking in the scene: disarmed mercenaries bound on the floor, Arthur Vance being cuffed by state troopers, and Gideon receiving first aid from paramedics.
Spencer stood near the grand staircase, wiping blood from his knuckles with a handkerchief.
"Mr. Warren!" Casey gasped, rushing toward him. "Are you alright?! What happened here?!"
"The conspiracy is over, Casey," Spencer said, handing her a black flash drive he had taken from Vance's inner jacket pocket—containing the full ledger of Vance's illegal offshore transactions and the stolen trust records. "Federal authorities will find everything they need on this drive."
"Where are the children?" Casey asked, her eyes wide with anxiety.
Spencer didn't answer with words. He turned and walked down the east corridor toward the study.
He reached the heavy steel panic room door, turning the manual pneumatic crank three times until the heavy deadbolts clicked open.
The door swung outward.
Inside the softly lit, secure room, Jocelyn was sitting on a sofa, cradling baby Dexter against her chest. Beside her, Charlee was sitting close, holding Mrs. Mabel's hand.
When the door opened and the bright light spilled inside, Charlee looked up.
Seeing Spencer standing in the doorway—alive, unbowed, and victorious—a radiant smile broke across her small face.
"Mr. Spencer!" she cried, running across the room and throwing her arms around his waist.
Spencer dropped to his knees, pulling his niece into a fierce, protective embrace, burying his face in her hair. "I told you I'd come back, Charlee. I promised."
Jocelyn walked over, holding baby Dexter safely in her arms. She looked down at Spencer, her eyes filled with tears of overwhelming gratitude, relief, and something new—something warm, profound, and beautiful.

Spencer reached up, placing his hand gently over hers, feeling the soft warmth of his baby son sleeping peacefully between them.
The storm outside had finally passed.
