Chapter 4 - Blood in the SnowThe heavy steel door of the panic room clicked shut behind me, plunging me into a dim, amber-lit sanctuary lined with monitors, communication arrays, and emergency supplies. Through the high-resolution exterior cameras mounted around the perimeter of the lodge, I watched the nightmare unfold in real-time.

Four figures dressed in black tactical gear materialized out of the dense pine forest like phantoms. They moved with terrifying synchronization, bypassing the exterior floodlights and hugging the shadows of the stone walls.

On screen two, I saw Nicholas and Marcus moving through the grand hallway, weapons drawn, taking up defensive positions near the main staircase. They weren't panicking; they moved with the eerie, practiced calm of men who had danced with death a thousand times before.

Pop. Pop-pop.

The muted, suppressed crack of gunfire echoed through the structural audio feeds.

On camera four, the glass patio doors in the dining room shattered inward in a cascade of glittering shards. Two of the tactical intruders poured into the house, weapons raised.

Nicholas stepped out from the shadows of the hallway archway. The first intruder fired wildly, but Nicholas’s return fire was instantaneous and brutal. The man dropped instantly, clutching his shoulder as he hit the hardwood floor. The second intruder lunged forward, tackling Nicholas hard against the stone fireplace.

My breath hitched in my throat. I slammed my hands against the control console, watching through the monitor as my husband—the man I had buried six months ago—grappled for control of a weapon with a trained killer.

Marcus entered the fray a second later, driving the butt of his rifle hard into the second intruder’s temple, sending him crashing into unconsciousness.

Outside, the remaining two operatives realized their assault had failed and scrambled back toward the tree line, disappearing into the falling snow just as the distant wail of backup vehicles began to echo up the mountain road.

In the panic room, the intercom buzzed.

“Elena,” Nicholas’s voice crackled through the speaker, sounding slightly winded. “Open the door. It’s over.”

I pressed the release toggle, and the massive steel door swung open.

Nicholas stood in the corridor, his shirt torn at the shoulder, a fresh graze bleeding sluggishly along his collarbone. He looked exhausted, but his dark eyes were burning with an intense, triumphant fire.

“You okay?” he asked, stepping inside and checking me over with a quick, clinical glance.

“I’m fine,” I said, clutching the heavy pistol he had given me, my knuckles white. But inside, I was shaking violently. “They found us, Nicholas. Your grand plan to fake your death and hide out here? It’s leaking. They followed you right to my doorstep.”

“They didn't follow me,” Nicholas corrected grimly, wiping a smear of blood from his neck with a handkerchief. “They tracked the digital ping from the Chicago toll cameras when Marcus picked us up at the cemetery.”

He looked down at me, his expression softening into something uncharacteristically vulnerable.

“Which means,” he continued quietly, “they know you’re alive now, too. The illusion is shattered, Elena. We can’t hide anymore.”

“Good,” I said, stepping closer to him, letting the heavy pistol slide down to my side. The fear that had paralyzed me moments earlier was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, unifying resolve. “Because I am officially done hiding. If these bastards want a war, it’s time we give them one.”
