CHAPTER 2 — THE WEDDING THAT BEGAN TO COLLAPSE

The hospital room remained silent after William Carter’s words.

No one dared speak.

Not Adrian.

Not Vanessa.

Not even the nurses who had quietly gathered outside the partially open door after hearing raised voices.

William stood beside Emma’s bed, his attention fixed on the newborn in her arms.

Charlotte slept peacefully.

Unaware that her existence had just shaken one of New York’s wealthiest families.

The old billionaire gently touched her tiny hand again.

Then he turned toward Adrian.

His expression hardened instantly.

“Tell me something.”

Adrian swallowed.

“What?”

William’s eyes narrowed.

“Did you know Emma was pregnant when you filed for divorce?”

The question hit like a gunshot.

“No.”

“Are you certain?”

“Yes.”

William studied him.

For several uncomfortable seconds.

Then nodded.

Not because he believed him completely.

Because he believed Adrian was too self-absorbed to notice.

That was somehow worse.

“You never asked?”

Adrian looked away.

“No.”

“You never wondered why she suddenly stopped drinking wine at family dinners?”

Silence.

“You never questioned the doctor appointments?”

More silence.

“You never noticed your wife becoming exhausted?”

Emma closed her eyes.

Every question hurt.

Not because William was wrong.

Because he was right.

Adrian hadn’t noticed.

Not once.

Not because he was evil.

Because he simply wasn’t paying attention.

And nothing was more painful than being invisible to the person who promised to love you.

Vanessa finally broke the silence.

“This is ridiculous.”

Everyone looked at her.

She forced a smile.

“The baby changes nothing.”

William turned slowly.

The older man's gaze could freeze oceans.

“Nothing?”

Vanessa straightened.

“Yes.”

William almost laughed.

The sound carried no humor.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”

For the first time, genuine uncertainty crossed Vanessa’s face.

Because William Carter was famous for many things.

Kindness wasn't one of them.

If he looked concerned—

she should have been terrified.

“Grandfather—”

William raised a hand.

“Not now.”

Adrian immediately stopped talking.

The room noticed.

Emma noticed.

Because even at forty years old, Adrian still reacted to his grandfather like a schoolboy facing a headmaster.

The old billionaire looked toward Emma.

“Do you still have it?”

Emma nodded.

“Yes.”

Vanessa frowned.

“Have what?”

Emma reached for her handbag.

Then removed a thin navy-blue folder.

William’s expression darkened.

“That.”

Vanessa felt a knot form in her stomach.

“What is that?”

Neither answered immediately.

Which only made her more nervous.

Finally Emma opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Dozens of them.

Old emails.

Financial records.

Corporate communications.

Contracts.

The evidence she had spent nearly a year collecting.

The evidence she never thought she'd need.

Until the divorce began.

Adrian stared.

Recognition appeared instantly.

“No.”

Emma met his gaze.

“Yes.”

His face drained.

Because he knew exactly what was inside.

Not everything.

But enough.

Enough to understand the danger.

Vanessa looked between them.

“What is happening?”

William finally answered.

“Evidence.”

The single word landed heavily.

“Evidence of what?”

Emma’s voice remained calm.

“Fraud.”

Vanessa laughed.

A nervous laugh.

“This is insane.”

“No.”

Emma opened the first document.

“This is insane.”

The younger woman’s smile disappeared.

Sixteen months earlier.

Before the divorce.

Before the public scandal.

Before everything exploded.

Emma had noticed irregularities.

Tiny ones.

Easy to miss.

Expense reports that didn’t match.

Travel records with inconsistencies.

Missing funds.

At first she assumed accounting errors.

Then she looked closer.

And discovered something shocking.

Someone inside Carter Holdings had been moving money.

A lot of money.

Millions.

Not enough to trigger alarms.

Enough to matter.

The transactions always connected to the same department.

The same accounts.

The same approvals.

Vanessa’s approvals.

Emma initially refused to believe it.

Her assistant?

Impossible.

Until the evidence became impossible to ignore.

Back in the hospital room, Vanessa’s breathing quickened.

“You investigated me?”

Emma shook her head.

“No.”

A pause.

“I investigated missing money.”

William’s eyes never left Vanessa.

“How much?”

Emma answered immediately.

“Twenty-eight million dollars.”

The room went silent.

Even Adrian looked stunned.

“Twenty-eight million?”

Emma nodded.

“Over three years.”

Vanessa’s face had gone completely white.

“That’s a lie.”

Emma slid another document forward.

“Bank transfers.”

Another.

“Shell companies.”

Another.

“Fake consulting firms.”

Vanessa stared at them.

Frozen.

Because she recognized every page.

Every signature.

Every account.

Every lie.

Adrian slowly looked toward her.

The realization hit him piece by piece.

“No.”

Vanessa immediately grabbed his arm.

“Adrian—”

“No.”

His voice was different now.

Cold.

Dangerously cold.

“You stole from us?”

“No!”

“You did.”

“No!”

The panic in her voice revealed everything.

William stepped forward.

“Twenty-eight million dollars.”

Vanessa backed away.

The old billionaire continued.

“While sleeping with a married executive.”

Silence.

“Bold.”

Another step.

“Very bold.”

Vanessa’s composure finally cracked.

“You don’t understand!”

William laughed.

The sound was terrifying.

“Then explain.”

No answer came.

Because there wasn't one.

Not a good one.

Not a believable one.

Not a legal one.

Adrian sank into a chair.

The room felt smaller.

Hotter.

Harder to breathe in.

Because every revelation created another question.

And every question led somewhere ugly.

“How long?”

Vanessa looked away.

“How long what?”

“How long were you stealing?”

No answer.

His voice hardened.

“How long?”

Finally—

“Four years.”

The confession shattered what little remained of the room’s stability.

Adrian stared.

Four years.

Longer than he had been involved with her.

Longer than the affair itself.

Which meant one horrifying possibility.

Vanessa hadn’t targeted him because she loved him.

She targeted him because he was useful.

The realization hit hard.

Painfully hard.

Emma watched it happen.

Watched the truth settle into his expression.

And despite everything—

despite the betrayal—

despite the divorce—

she felt nothing.

No satisfaction.

No revenge.

No triumph.

Only distance.

Because the man who destroyed their marriage was no longer her responsibility.

Then William received a phone call.

The old billionaire listened silently.

His expression becoming darker with each passing second.

Finally he ended the call.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

“What is it?” Adrian asked.

William looked at him.

Then at Vanessa.

Then back again.

The answer came quietly.

“The church is empty.”

Vanessa frowned.

“What?”

“The wedding.”

Her stomach dropped.

William continued.

“Canceled.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“That’s impossible.”

William handed Adrian his phone.

The screen displayed dozens of messages.

News alerts.

Family messages.

Board communications.

Photos.

Videos.

Everything spreading online.

Because somehow—

someone had leaked the financial investigation.

And once reporters connected Vanessa’s name to the missing money—

every guest suddenly found somewhere else to be.

Vanessa looked like she might faint.

“My wedding—”

William interrupted.

“Was never your biggest problem.”

The room fell silent again.

Because everyone understood.

The wedding was over.

The reputation was over.

The lies were over.

And soon—

the freedom might be over too.

A knock interrupted the tension.

The hospital door opened.

A woman in a dark suit entered.

Federal investigator.

Badge displayed clearly.

Professional.

Serious.

Unsmiling.

She looked directly at Vanessa.

“Ms. Reynolds?”

Vanessa froze.

“Yes?”

The investigator stepped forward.

“We need to speak with you regarding several financial crimes.”

The blood drained from Vanessa’s face.

The room became completely still.

Then the investigator added six words that changed everything.

“You have the right to remain silent.”

Vanessa’s knees nearly gave out.

And as Emma held her newborn daughter close, she realized the day that was supposed to celebrate a wedding had become something else entirely.

May you like

A reckoning.

And it was only beginning.
