Chapter 5 - The Resurrection of Justice

The medical monitors in the intensive care unit beeped in a steady, monotonous rhythm. It was Tuesday morning, four days after the emergency surgery.
Mariana’s eyes fluttered open. The white ceiling of the hospital room took a long time to stabilize, her vision blurred by the heavy sedatives flowing through her veins. She felt a profound, hollow ache in her lower abdomen—a physical sensation of empty space that made her chest tighten with an instinctual terror.
"Mateo..." she tried to say, but her vocal cords were raw from the emergency intubation tube.
"Mari? Oh my God, Mari, you’re awake!"
Lucía’s face appeared in her field of vision. Her sister looked exhausted, with deep dark circles under her eyes and her hair tied in a messy bun, but her smile was filled with a pure, watery relief. She immediately took Mariana’s hand, kissing her knuckles over and over.
"My baby... where is my baby?" Mariana managed to whisper, her throat burning.
"Mateo is safe, my love. He’s right here," Lucía said, shifting the plastic hospital bassinet closer to the bed. Inside, wrapped in a soft blue blanket, the eight-day-old boy was sleeping soundly, his cheeks pink and healthy.
Mariana looked at her son, and the tears finally broke through her eyes, sliding down her pale cheeks into her hair. She reached out her hand, her fingers brushing the soft fabric of his blanket. She was alive. Her son was alive.
Then, the memory of Friday afternoon returned like a physical blow. She remembered the cold floor, the blood, and the image of Alejandro adjusting his white linen shirt in the mirror, telling her not to ruin his birthday weekend with her hysterics.
"Alejandro..." Mariana whispered, her eyes turning into flint. "Where is he?"
Lucía’s face instantly darkened, the warmth leaving her expression, replaced by a cold, sharp severity. "He’s at the house, Mari. Or rather, he’s trying to pretend you don't exist. He and his mother spent the weekend clearing out the apartment. They cut out the nursery carpet, threw away your clothes, and filed a statement with the gated community’s administration claiming you had a mental breakdown and abandoned him."
Mariana stared at her sister, the sheer, unimaginable cruelty of the revelation washing over her. They hadn't just left her to die; they had tried to erase her life, to steal her reputation, and to position her husband as the victim.
"They think they’ve won, Mari," Lucía continued, pulling a heavy manila folder from her briefcase. "They think because they cleaned the blood from the floor, there is no evidence. But they forgot one thing. I’m an architect, Mariana. I know how structures work. And I brought a forensic medical expert into that house before the cleaning crew arrived on Saturday morning."
Lucía opened the folder, pulling out a series of high-resolution digital photographs. "We used Luminol, Mariana. Even though they bleached the marble and replaced the nursery floor, the blood had already soaked deep into the porous concrete foundation beneath the wood. The forensic report shows a massive, undeniable pattern of human hemorrhage that matches your hospital admission records perfectly. And more importantly..."
Lucía pulled out a small, metallic flash drive. "Alejandro forgot that he had installed a high-definition Nest security camera in the hallway outside the nursery three months ago to monitor the baby's sleep. He thought he deleted the cloud account from his phone on Saturday morning, but the corporate subscription was under your email address, Mari. I downloaded the entire video history from Friday afternoon before he could change the master password."
Mariana reached for the flash drive, her hand shaking with a combination of physical weakness and an immense, burning determination. "Does it show him?"
"It shows everything," Lucía said, her voice dropping to a whisper. "It shows you on the floor, bleeding, begging him for an ambulance. It shows him laughing, stepping over your arm, adjusting his watch, and walking out the door while you collapsed. It is an open-and-shut case of attempted homicide by omission and criminal abandonment."

Mariana closed her eyes for a brief second, feeling the hollow ache in her abdomen transform into a hard, crystalline core of pure, unadulterated resolve. Alejandro Solís had wanted a life with zero drama. He had wanted to preserve his wealth, his status, and his luxury lifestyle at the cost of her life.
"Lucía," Mariana said, opening her eyes, her gaze burning with an intensity that her sister had never seen before. "Call the public prosecutor’s office. Tell them I am ready to sign the complaint. And call the media. I want his father's firm to see exactly who they are doing business with."
