Chapter 6 - The Shattered Mirror

The rain was pouring hard over the corporate towers of Santa Fe on Thursday morning. Inside the executive boardroom of Solís & Partners Real Estate, Alejandro sat at the head of the massive mahogany table, reviewing a fifty-million-peso commercial development contract.

His mother, Doña Elena, sat beside him, looking elegant in a Chanel suit, a soft smile of satisfaction on her face. It had been nearly a week since the incident in Lomas Verdes, and the police had not called. The neighborhood was quiet, and Mariana’s family had remained completely silent. Alejandro had convinced himself that Lucía had realized the futility of a legal battle against a family with their resources.

"Excellent work on this portfolio, Alejandro," the senior partner, an elderly man named Don Roberto, said, adjusting his spectacles. "Your father would be proud. You have maintained the integrity of our brand through a very transitionary period."

"Thank you, Don Roberto," Alejandro said, leaning back in his leather chair, a wave of immense pride washing over him. "Family and business require discipline. One must always keep a cool head, regardless of the domestic—"

Suddenly, the massive glass doors of the boardroom were pushed open with a violent, resounding crash.

Alejandro stopped talking, his jaw dropping as three active-duty officers from the federal judicial police, accompanied by two agents from the Special Prosecutor's Office for Crimes Against Women, marched into the room. Leading the procession, walking slowly but with an absolute, terrifying dignity, was Mariana.

She was dressed in a simple, elegant black dress, her face pale but her eyes wide and clear. She wasn't carrying a weapon or a shield; she was holding an official, blue-ribboned warrant from a federal judge. Beside her stood Lucía and a prominent corporate defense attorney.

"Alejandro Solís," the lead police officer announced, his voice booming over the silent boardroom. "We have a federal warrant for your immediate arrest under charges of attempted femicide by omission, criminal abandonment of a vulnerable person, and destruction of forensic evidence."

Doña Elena stood up instantly, her face turning a pasty, uneven yellow. "What is the meaning of this?! This is a corporate meeting! You can't just storm in here with these ridiculous, domestic fabrications! My daughter-in-law had a psychiatric episode—"

"Shut up, Elena," Mariana said. Her voice wasn't loud, but it possessed a cold, resonant authority that cut through the room like a razor blade. She walked up to the edge of the mahogany table, looking directly into her husband’s terrified, bloodless eyes.

"The nursery is empty, Alejandro," Mariana said softly. "You cut the carpet. You replaced the floorboards. You thought you could erase me, just like you erased our son from your mind when you went to Valle de Bravo to drink tequila. But you forgot that the truth doesn't wash away with bleach."

Lucía stepped forward, slamming a portable tablet onto the center of the boardroom table. She hit play.

The corporate partners, including Don Roberto, leaned forward, staring at the screen in absolute horror. On the high-definition display, the security video from Friday afternoon began to play. The audio was crystal clear. The partners heard Mariana’s broken, desperate voice begging for an ambulance. They saw Alejandro standing in front of the mirror, adjusting his linen shirt, letting out that dry, cynical laugh.

"Stop making such a fuss, Mariana. It's my birthday, not your funeral."

The words echoed through the silent boardroom, followed by the sight of Alejandro stepping over his wife’s bleeding form, grabbing his sunglasses, and walking out the door while the newborn baby shrieked in the background.

Don Roberto slowly stood up, his face lined with a deep, visceral disgust as he looked at Alejandro. "You... you are a monster," the old man whispered, his hands shaking. "You left your wife to bleed to death for a birthday party? Get out of my building, Alejandro. You are officially terminated from this firm, effective this exact second. We will turn over all your corporate financial records to the authorities for embezzlement verification."

"No! Don Roberto, please! It’s a misunderstanding!" Alejandro shrieked, backing away from the table as the police officers stepped around the perimeter to surround him. "Mariana, please! We’re a family! Think of Mateo!"

"I am thinking of Mateo," Mariana said, her voice dropping into a tone of absolute finality. "And that is why I am ensuring he will never grow up to be anything like you."

The lead officer grabbed Alejandro’s arms, forcing them behind his back and snapping the heavy steel handcuffs over his wrists. Alejandro began to weep openly—tears of pure, cowardly terror as his expensive designer watch caught the light of the fluorescent lamps.

The second team of officers walked over to Doña Elena, serving her with a formal indictment for conspiracy to alter a crime scene and obstruction of justice. Her elegant Chanel purse fell to the floor, its contents spilling across the polished wood as she was led away alongside her sobbing son.

Mariana stood at the window of the Santa Fe tower, watching through the rain-streaked glass as the police cruisers drove Alejandro and his mother away, their sirens wailing into the gray morning. She felt a profound, hollow ache in her body—the reminder of the physical sacrifice she had endured—but she also felt a deep, overwhelming sense of liberation. The mirror of her old life was completely shattered, but the pieces could no longer cut her.

Two years later, the morning sun of spring filtered through the large windows of a beautiful, sunlit single-story house in the quiet, green neighborhood of Coyoacán. The air was filled with the sweet aroma of fresh vanilla pancakes and the sound of a child’s high-pitched, joyful laughter.

Mariana sat on a wooden bench in the central garden, watching as two-year-old Mateo chased a yellow butterfly across the green grass. Her son was healthy, strong, his dark eyes filled with an infinite, innocent joy. Beside her sat Lucía, holding a blueprint folder for the new children's foundation they had founded together—a sanctuary funded entirely by the multi-million-peso settlement from the liquidation of Alejandro’s real estate assets.

Alejandro was currently serving a twelve-year sentence in the Reclusorio Norte, his wealth gone, his status ruined, his name a permanent stain across the history of the city. He would spend his birthdays inside a concrete cell, surrounded by the silence of his own choices.

But in the garden of Coyoacán, the world went on. Mariana reached down, scooping her son into her arms as he ran toward her, burying his face into her shoulder. She looked up at the blue, cloudless sky, feeling the warmth of the sun against her skin. She had been left to die on a cold floor, but from the ashes of that betrayal, she had built a fortress of love, justice, and a beautiful, unbreakable future that would stand forever.
