Chapter 3 - The Web of DeceitOver the next three weeks, the war escalated into a public and legal firestorm.

Diego’s mother, Doña Silvia, attempted to visit Laura’s apartment three times, bringing expensive baby clothes and weeping at the front gate, begging for forgiveness. But Laura refused to open the door. The same woman who had brought trash bags to collect Diego’s clothes now found herself barred from ever touching her future grandchildren.
Meanwhile, the legal proceedings initiated by Uncle Hector struck Diego with catastrophic force.
His personal and business bank accounts were frozen by judicial order. The lavish apartment in Polanco he had rented with Paola became an unaffordable weight around his neck. To make matters worse, the corporate board at Diego’s financial firm began investigating his conduct after Laura’s legal team subpoenaed his company expense accounts, revealing he had been using corporate funds to finance weekend trips with Paola while claiming they were "client meetings."
One afternoon, Laura sat in Uncle Hector’s high-rise office downtown, going through financial documents. Her pregnancy was entering its second trimester, and a small, neat bump was now visible beneath her maternity dress. She looked healthier, her skin glowing despite the ongoing stress.
“Look at these transfer logs, Laura,” Hector said, sliding a thick blue folder across his polished mahogany desk. “Diego didn't just hire a bad lawyer. He’s been hiding assets for over a year.”
Laura blinked. “Hiding assets?”
“Eighteen months ago—long before his vasectomy—Diego created a shell company under Paola’s brother’s name,” Hector revealed, pointing to a series of wire transfers. “He’s been siphoning nearly twenty percent of his quarterly bonuses into that account. He was planning to leave you long before the pregnancy happened. The vasectomy was just his exit strategy so he could claim you were unfaithful and keep the entire marital estate for himself.”
Laura felt a cold sensation settle in her chest. The man she had spent eight years of her life with hadn't just made a mistake—he had meticulously planned her destruction.
“He thought he was clever,” Hector continued with a dry chuckle. “He thought he could use the vasectomy to frame you, take the house, keep the hidden funds, and walk away clean with Paola. But his own biology betrayed him.”
“What happens now?” Laura asked, her hand resting over her twins.
“Now, we crush him in court,” Hector declared calmly. “Because he committed fraud by hiding marital assets, the judge has grounds to award you seventy percent of the total marital estate, including the hidden funds in Paola’s brother’s account. Furthermore, his company’s compliance department opened a formal inquiry this morning. Diego and Paola are both facing immediate termination for gross misconduct and embezzlement of company funds.”
At that exact moment, Laura’s phone buzzed on the desk.
It was an incoming call from an unknown number. Laura hesitated, then pressed answer and placed it on speaker.
“Laura? Laura, please don't hang up!”
It was Paola’s voice. But the smug, arrogant tone she had used at the café was completely gone. She was sobbing hysterically.
“Paola?” Laura said, her voice cool and distant. “Why are you calling me?”
“You have to tell your lawyer to stop!” Paola begged, her voice frantic. “The police came to my apartment today! They served my brother with a court order! Diego lied to me, Laura! He told me he was already divorced! He told me the money he put in my brother’s account was his personal inheritance! I didn't know it was stolen from you!”
Laura exchanged a knowing look with Uncle Hector.
“You sat next to him at the café, Paola,” Laura said smoothly. “You held his hand while he demanded I pay him back for marital expenses. You smiled at me while I was alone and terrified. You were very happy to benefit from his lies when you thought I was the victim.”
“Diego is insane!” Paola screamed. “He’s losing his mind! He’s at his mother’s house breaking furniture! He lost his job an hour ago! Please, Laura, tell your lawyer to leave my family out of this! I’m leaving him! I’m moving back to Guadalajara today!”
“You reaped what you sowed, Paola,” Laura replied quietly. “Goodbye.”

Laura ended the call. She looked out the floor-to-ceiling window of Hector’s office, watching the bustling city below. For months she had felt like a helpless leaf blown around by Diego’s cruelty. But now, standing in the truth, she felt an overwhelming sense of power.
She wasn't just surviving. She was winning.
