Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

While Ramos set the legal machinery into motion, Elena and Martin formulated their next move. They returned to Iztapalapa just long enough to ensure little Diego’s fever had broken and Lucia was looked after. Martin wanted to storm into Ricardo’s office immediately, his construction-roughened fists itching for a confrontation, but Elena held him back.

“A bull breaks the china shop, Martin,” she advised him calmly, pouring a cup of simple black coffee. “A general wins the war without ever drawing a sword until the final moment. We don’t want them angry yet. We want them arrogant.”

That evening, Patricia’s private medical clinic in Coyoacán was closing its doors for the day. The parking lot was filled with luxury sedans belonging to affluent patients and visiting specialists. Patricia stepped out through the automated glass doors, wearing her crisp white coat over an expensive designer dress, her phone glued to her ear as she barked instructions to her receptionist.

“Make sure the VIP wing is prepped for the pharmaceutical board members tomorrow evening,” she snapped into the receiver. “I cannot afford any lapses in—”

A shadow fell across her path. She paused, looking up, expecting one of her assistants. Instead, she found her mother standing by her sleek white SUV.

Elena was wearing the same faded dress and scuffed shoes she had worn the day before, but her posture was completely different. She wasn't trembling. Her cane tapped against the concrete with a rhythmic, measured cadence.

Patricia’s face twisted into an expression of profound annoyance and embarrassment. She hastily ended her phone call and stepped forward, lowering her voice to a harsh hiss. “Mom? What are you doing here? Are you insane? If my patients or colleagues see you looking like that outside my clinic—”

“What will they think, Patricia?” Elena interrupted, her voice eerily calm. “Will they think the successful, brilliant Dr. Morales let her own mother sleep on the pavement? Will they wonder how a doctor who preaches ethics acquired a clinic funded by forged bank documents?”

Patricia froze. The blood drained entirely from her face, leaving her skin a pasty, sickly gray. “What... what are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about the safety deposit box your father left behind,” Elena said, stepping closer until Patricia instinctively backed away against the side of her car. “I’m talking about the fake foreclosure, the diverted equity, and the signatures you notarized with a borrowed seal.”

For a second, panic flickered in Patricia’s eyes, quickly masked by a desperate surge of arrogance. “You’re delusional! You’ve always been simple-minded, and now old age is making you invent fairy tales. If you think you can come here and threaten me for money, you’re gravely mistaken. I’ll call security and have you thrown in jail for harassment!”

Elena didn't raise her voice. She simply smiled—a cold, terrifying smile that sent a shiver straight down Patricia’s spine.

“Keep your security, Patricia. You’re going to need them much more than I do. Because by tomorrow afternoon, the only place you’ll be entering with a white coat is a federal holding cell.”

Without waiting for a reply, Elena turned and walked toward Martin’s waiting pickup truck parked across the street, leaving her daughter trembling beside her luxury vehicle, staring into the gathering dusk with absolute terror gripping her chest.
