Chapter 5 - The Road to RemissionThe next six months were a grueling, terrifying journey for the Cole family, but they were no longer walking it alone.

Leo was admitted to Columbus Presbyterian within the hour. The Vance Foundation’s funding covered the extensive chemotherapy required to prepare his little body, and miraculously, a match for the bone marrow transplant was found on the national registry within three weeks.

Throughout the process, Maya kept a professional distance, but she monitored Leo’s progress daily. She ensured that Derek was provided with a small stipend from the foundation’s family-support wing so he wouldn't have to leave his son's bedside to look for work.

Derek spent those months sitting in a sterile hospital room, watching the toxic chemicals drip into his son’s veins, thinking about the trajectory of his life. He thought about the day he had chosen corporate metrics over human compassion. He realized that if Maya had operated with the same cold calculus he had used that day in the grocery store, he would be holding a funeral for his son. The weight of that realization cracked Derek open, burning away his cowardice and reshaping him into a man who finally understood the true value of grace.

Meanwhile, the dynamic between Maya and Julian Vance evolved from professional admiration into a deep, undeniable romance.

It wasn't a sudden explosion of passion, but a quiet, steady building of trust. Julian, who had spent his life guarding his heart against opportunists, found himself completely disarmed by Maya’s authenticity. He started joining her for Sunday dinners at the townhouse. Ruth adored him, constantly feeding the billionaire homemade dumplings and scolding him when he checked his phone at the table. Julian, to the shock of his corporate board, took it with a smile.

Caleb, who had spent his life without a father figure, found a quiet mentor in Julian. Julian taught the boy how to play chess, how to tie a Windsor knot, and how to carry himself with confidence.

One evening in late autumn, Julian took Maya to the rooftop garden of the Vance Enterprises tower. The city lights spread out beneath them like a carpet of crushed diamonds. Julian poured two glasses of sparkling cider—remembering that Maya didn't drink alcohol—and handed her one.

"Leo Cole’s scans came back today," Julian said, leaning against the glass railing.

Maya held her breath. "And?"

"Complete remission," Julian smiled. "The transplant took. His white blood cell counts are normal. He's going home on Friday."

Maya closed her eyes, letting out a long, shaky exhale. A tear slipped down her cheek, catching the city light. "Thank God."

Julian set his glass down. He turned to Maya, stepping into her personal space. The cold wind whipped around them, but Julian radiated an intense, grounding heat.

"You saved him, Maya," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave. "You saved my mother. You saved that little boy. And if I'm being entirely honest... you saved me, too."

Maya looked up into his slate-gray eyes. "You didn't need saving, Julian. You were already building empires."

"Empires are just glass and steel," Julian murmured, reaching out to gently cup her face in his hands. "Before I met you, my life was a ledger. Profit and loss. Assets and liabilities. I didn't know what it meant to actually build something that mattered. You brought a heart into my world. You taught me how to live."

Maya’s breath hitched as Julian leaned in. His lips met hers—soft at first, asking permission, and then deepening into a kiss that held all the fierce, protective devotion he had felt for her since the day he first saw her in that cramped apartment.

Maya wrapped her arms around his neck, kissing him back, feeling the solid, unshakeable strength of the man who had pulled her out of the dark.

When they finally broke apart, Julian rested his forehead against hers. "I want you in my life forever, Maya. Not just as my director. As my partner. In everything."

"I love you, Julian," Maya whispered, the words true and absolute.

May you like

"Then marry me," he breathed, looking deep into her eyes. "Let me take care of you and Caleb for the rest of our lives."

Maya smiled, a radiant, beautiful expression that lit up the night. "Yes."
