CHAPTER 2 — THE FOOTAGE THAT SHOULD NOT EXIST

The siren grew louder.
Not just one.
Multiple.
Approaching fast.
But no one on that street moved.
Not Emily.
Not Richard Hawthorne.
Not even the three trembling boys clinging to her arms.
Because something far more dangerous than police sirens had just entered the story.
Truth.
Richard stood frozen, staring at his sons like he was seeing them for the first time.
Barefoot.
Shaking.
Scratches on their arms.
Dust and blood on their knees.
And clinging to Emily Carter like she was the only solid thing in a collapsing world.
His voice came out lower this time.
Careful.
Controlled.
“What happened in my house?”
Ethan swallowed hard.
“She said we broke something.”
Noah nodded quickly.
“And she got mad.”
Liam’s small voice broke.
“She locked the door and said we had to stay there until Daddy came back.”
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“That’s not possible.”
Emily’s voice was steady—but sharp.
“Is it?”
That question hit harder than any accusation.
Richard didn’t answer.
Because something inside him already knew—
it was possible.
Victoria Lane had always been charming in public.
Perfect in photographs.
Soft-spoken in meetings.
But behind closed doors—
there had always been something off.
Something he chose to ignore.
Because ignoring it was easier.
Safer.
Comfortable.
Emily crouched slightly to steady the boys.
“Did she hurt you?” she asked gently.
Ethan hesitated.
Then nodded once.
“She grabbed Noah’s arm.”
Noah pulled up his sleeve immediately.
A bruise.
Faint.
But real.
Richard’s breath caught.
His eyes locked onto it.
“No…” he whispered.
And for the first time—
doubt entered his voice.
Emily straightened slowly.
“You threw me out before you asked a single question,” she said quietly.
Richard flinched.
“But your children are telling you everything now.”
A long silence followed.
Then—
a voice interrupted from behind them.
Cold.
Sharp.
Feminine.
“Oh my God.”
Victoria Lane stood at the edge of the street.
Still in designer heels.
Still flawless makeup.
Still wearing the mask.
But her eyes—
her eyes were different.
Tight.
Panicked.
Calculating.
“Richard,” she said softly. “What is going on?”
The boys immediately stiffened.
Ethan pointed at her.
“She’s the one!”
“No!” Victoria gasped, stepping forward quickly. “Richard, listen to me—these children are upset, they’re confused—”
“No,” Noah shouted. “You locked us!”
Victoria’s face flickered for a fraction of a second.
Just a fraction.
But Emily saw it.
Richard saw it too.
And that was the first crack.
Victoria placed a hand over her chest.
“I would never hurt them,” she said, voice trembling perfectly. “You know me.”
Richard didn’t respond.
Instead—
he pulled out his phone.
And that changed everything.
“What are you doing?” Victoria asked sharply.
Richard didn’t look at her.
“I installed new security cameras last week.”
Emily’s eyes narrowed slightly.
Victoria’s breathing changed.
Barely noticeable.
But real.
Richard continued.
“After the break-in report from the west wing.”
Victoria forced a laugh.
“Of course. That’s responsible. But what does that have to do with anything?”
Richard opened the app.
Swiped.
Tapped.
Silence.
Then—
he stopped walking.
His face went completely still.
Emily stepped closer.
“What is it?”
Richard didn’t answer.
He simply turned the screen.
And played the footage.
A hallway inside the mansion.
Late afternoon.
The boys running.
Laughing at first.
Victoria appearing behind them.
Smiling.
Too calmly.
Too perfectly.
Then her voice.
“We need to talk.”
The boys stopping.
Confused.
Then—
the door closing.
Locking.
A click.
Clear.
Undeniable.
No editing.
No ambiguity.
Just truth.
Victoria locking the door.
Richard’s hand trembled.
He replayed the next segment.
Victoria’s voice inside the recording:
“They need to learn boundaries.”
Another pause.
Then softer:
“Emily has been influencing them too much.”
Emily went still.
Richard’s face drained of color.
The phone nearly slipped from his hand.
Victoria stared at the screen.
And for the first time—
the mask cracked completely.
“No,” she whispered. “That’s taken out of context.”
Ethan screamed instantly.
“That’s YOU!”
Noah grabbed Emily tighter.
“She lied!”
Liam started crying again.
Richard didn’t move.
Didn’t blink.
Didn’t breathe properly.
Because the footage didn’t just show misconduct.
It showed intent.
Planning.
Control.
Fear.
And something worse.
Confidence.
Victoria stepped forward quickly.
“Richard, I can explain—”
“Stop.”
His voice cut through the air like glass.
Victoria froze.
For the first time—
she stopped speaking.
Richard looked at her slowly.
“Explain what?”
A pause.
“The locked door?”
Silence.
“The bruises?”
Silence.
“The fact that my children ran barefoot through traffic to escape you?”
Victoria’s eyes filled instantly.
“I was protecting them!”
The lie came too fast.
Too practiced.
Too desperate.
Emily exhaled softly.
Even she hadn’t expected that one.
Richard’s voice dropped.
“From what?”
Victoria hesitated.
Half a second too long.
And that was all it took.
Richard looked at her like he had finally woken up from a long, expensive dream.
“You were the threat,” he said quietly.
The words broke something in her.
“No!” she snapped. “You don’t understand—Emily turned them against me!”
Emily laughed once.
Cold.
Sharp.
“You didn’t need help,” she said calmly. “They already don’t trust you.”
Victoria turned on her instantly.
“You poisoned them!”
Ethan stepped forward bravely.
“She didn’t do anything!”
Noah nodded.
“She saved us!”
Liam wiped his face.
“She always saved us!”
The street fell silent again.
Richard looked at Emily.
Not as an employee.
Not as a suspect.
But as something else.
Something heavier.
“What did you mean earlier?” he asked quietly.
Emily frowned slightly.
“When?”
“You said I don’t know what you don’t see.”
A pause.
Emily looked down at the boys.
Then back at him.
“You don’t see anything that doesn’t fit your version of life,” she said.
That hit harder than anything else.
Richard looked away.
Because it was true.
And he knew it.
Sirens arrived.
Police cars.
Security vehicles.
Chaos approaching.
Victoria suddenly backed away.
“No,” she whispered. “No, this is a misunderstanding—Richard—please—”
But Richard didn’t move.
Didn’t stop her.
Didn’t defend her.
For the first time in his life—
he chose silence over control.
And that silence—
was louder than any accusation.
Victoria looked around desperately.
Then turned and ran.
But it was too late.
The truth had already been recorded.
Already witnessed.
Already burned into reality.
Richard finally spoke again.
Softly.
“Bring her back.”
Security moved.
Emily stood still, holding the boys.
But one thing had changed.
Everything.
Richard looked at her again.
This time—
no anger.
No dismissal.
Just something heavier.
“What do I do now?” he asked.
Emily didn’t answer immediately.
Because for once—
the billionaire wasn’t in control anymore.
May you like
A father was.
And he had just learned the cost of ignoring the truth.
