Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Hostility

The boardroom on the forty-fifth floor of Blackwood Plaza was entirely silent, save for the rhythmic hum of the air filtration system. The massive mahogany table reflected the distant lights of the Seattle harbor like a sheet of dark glass.

Arthur Caldwell sat at the far end of the table, his heavy frame packed into a double-breasted navy suit, his fingers aggressively tapping against a gold pen. Vanessa sat beside him, her expression a mix of venomous triumph and nervous agitation. Surrounding them were six minority board members, all of them looking down at their tablets with anxious, strained expressions.

The double doors swung open at exactly 6:02 p.m. Ethan walked in alone, his dark charcoal suit perfectly pressed, his hands tucked into his pockets. He didn't take his seat at the head of the table; instead, he walked down the long length of the room, standing directly opposite Arthur Caldwell.

"Ethan," Arthur began, his voice booming with the practiced authority of an old-money industrialist. "We’ve been waiting. I assume you’ve brought your resignation as chairman of the plaza project? After the stunt you pulled yesterday—having my daughter dragged out of your home by common security guards while you harbor an unstable, fraudulent woman from your past—the board cannot legally validate your leadership."

Vanessa leaned forward, her eyes narrowing into cold slits. "You ruined my reputation at the club, Ethan. You brought a gutter child into the house I designed. My father has already contacted the press. By tomorrow morning, every newspaper in the state will know that the great Ethan Blackwood is an erratic, unfit executive who abandons his corporate obligations for a maid."

Ethan didn't blink. He reached into his vest pocket, pulled out a small, sleek black flash drive, and tossed it onto the mahogany table. It slid smoothly across the wood, stopping exactly an inch from Arthur’s gold pen.

"What is that?" Arthur sneered, not touching it.

"That is the complete transactional history of Apex Holdings from July of 2019," Ethan said, his voice level, quiet, and completely devoid of emotion. "It includes the personal IP addresses used by your daughter to access the private scheduling servers of Blackwood Logistics. It also includes the wire transfers your firm made to three senior port inspectors to hold my cargo containers at the border until my company faced liquidation."

The room went entirely, deathly cold. Two of the minority board members looked up sharply, their faces turning pale.

"That's absolute nonsense," Arthur blustered, though a bead of sweat began to trace its way down the side of his silver hair. "That was a standard debt consolidation. We saved your company from your own poor management, Blackwood!"

"You didn't save anything, Arthur," Ethan said, leaning over the table, his large hands resting flat against the wood as he glared down at the older man. "You used a manufactured default to threaten a twenty-five-year-old woman who was pregnant with my child. You told her you would ruin my father's name and put me in a federal penitentiary if she didn't disappear into the night. You let me live in bitterness for seven years while your daughter moved into my house and pretended she was the savior of my legacy."

"Ethan, you have no legal proof that connects those events to the current merger!" Vanessa shouted, her voice rising into an unstable shriek. "The contract is signed! The breakup fee is fifty million dollars! If you default on the merger, we will take your towers!"

"Look at your phone, Vanessa," Ethan said, straightening back up and stepping away from the table.

At that exact second, every tablet and smartphone in the room began to chime simultaneously with emergency news alerts. The monitor on the wall, which had been displaying the Blackwood corporate logo, automatically switched to a live broadcast from the State Capitol. A female anchor was speaking with an expression of intense gravity.

"...Breaking news from Olympia. The State Attorney General has just announced a sweeping, multi-agency indictment against Caldwell Infrastructure for massive environmental fraud, systemic bribery of public officials, and illegal dumping in the northern riverfront wetlands. The governor has issued an emergency executive order freezing all corporate assets associated with the Caldwell family trusts pending a federal asset forfeiture review..."

Arthur Caldwell’s gold pen slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the wood before rolling off the edge onto the carpet. His mouth opened slightly, his chest heaving as his eyes darted from the screen to Ethan’s face.

"You... you blew up the entire riverfront project," Arthur whispered, his voice cracking with a sudden, senile terror. "Your own shares... you lost fifty million dollars today..."

"I don't care about fifty million dollars, Arthur," Ethan said, walking toward the boardroom doors. "I care about my daughter’s cold fingers. The federal marshals are downstairs in the lobby right now, Arthur. They aren't here for a board meeting. They’re here for you."

Ethan stopped at the door, looking back over his shoulder at Vanessa, who was staring at her phone in a state of complete, catatonic shock as her personal credit lines were deleted from the system one by one.

"The wedding is cancelled, Vanessa," Ethan said. "And if I ever see you or your father within five hundred miles of my family again, I won't use the law. I’ll use my wallet, and I will buy every square inch of ground you try to sleep on."
