Chapter 5 - The Rehearsal Dinner

The grand ballroom of the Cole estate glittered under thousands of crystal chandelier lights. Long mahogany tables draped in imported French linen were laden with silver candelabras, crystal stemware, and custom menu cards embossed with gold foil. Three hundred elite guests—executives, politicians, and high-society socialites—chattered animatedly, sipping vintage champagne and celebrating the union of Cole Meridian’s founder and the daughter of one of Charleston’s oldest political dynasties.

At the head table, Daniel sat beside Vanessa, who looked breathtaking in a custom Oscar de la Renta evening gown. Yet, despite the luxury surrounding them, Daniel looked uneasy. His gaze kept drifting toward the side doors where the catering and estate staff moved quietly, ensuring every glass remained full.

At the back of the room, standing near the AV control booth, Amara wore her formal black-and-white staff uniform. In her pocket rested Henry’s micro-SD card.

The room quieted as Eleanor Hale, Vanessa’s mother, stood up with a crystal glass in her hand to toast the couple.

"To Daniel and Vanessa," Eleanor began, her voice ringing clear across the ballroom. "A union of brilliance and beauty, a pairing that represents the absolute pinnacle of our community. We are so proud to welcome Daniel into our family, a man who has achieved greatness not just through his intellect, but through his uncompromising standards of excellence—standards that leave no room for error, carelessness, or substandard behavior."

A subtle dig. Amara saw Daniel’s jaw tighten at the phrasing. He clearly didn't appreciate his mother-in-law's elitist undertones, but he remained silent to keep the peace before the wedding.

As Eleanor finished her toast to polite applause, Marcus Vance stepped up to the microphone next.

"As legal counsel and longtime friend to Daniel," Marcus began smoothly, adjusting his cufflinks, "I’ve watched him build Cole Meridian from the ground up. I’ve watched him vet code, vet partners, and vet people. Integrity is everything in our world. And Vanessa, you have brought an incredible grace and elegance into his life—qualties that were beautifully demonstrated even under the stress of minor mishaps earlier this week..."

Marcus glanced directly toward the back of the room, locking eyes with Amara for a fraction of a second. A silent warning. Don't try anything.

Amara didn't flinch. She stepped forward, slipping past the catering staff toward the master AV console where the head sound engineer was managing the projector feeds for the evening's slideshow presentation.

"Excuse me," Amara said calmly to the technician. "Mr. Cole requested a supplementary slide be inserted into the presentation loop immediately. High-priority corporate override."

The technician, accustomed to last-minute executive whims at high-end tech events, nodded and gestured to the auxiliary port. "Drop it in."

Amara pulled the micro-SD card from her pocket, slid it into the reader, and hit execute.

On the massive projector screen hanging above the head table—surrounded by romantic engagement photos of Daniel and Vanessa—the slideshow abruptly paused. The screen flickered black for half a second.

Then, the high-definition security camera footage from the patio began to play.
