Chapter 5 - Shadows of the PastWhile peace had settled over the Callahan estate, resentment was festering in the dark corners of Seattle's business elite.

Marcus Voss had lost fifteen percent of his net worth following his sudden exit from Callahan Global. His daughter, Helena, had become a social outcast, her name mocked in the city’s high-society gossip columns after details of her eviction from the gala leaked to the press.

In a private dining room at an upscale steakhouse in Bellevue, Marcus Voss sat across from Arthur Vance.

"He’s given three billion dollars to a maid’s bastard!" Marcus snarled, slamming his scotch glass onto the dark mahogany table. "Three billion dollars! That money belonged to the shareholders! It belonged to us!"

Arthur Vance took a slow sip of his whiskey, his eyes dark with calculating malice. "Richard has lost his mind, Marcus. He’s running that company like a personal charity. But more importantly... he’s vulnerable."

Marcus leaned forward. "What do you mean?"

"I’ve been doing some digging into Lila Bennett," Arthur said, pulling a thin manila folder from his briefcase and sliding it across the table. "She was a junior nurse at a free clinic in San Francisco four years ago. Did you know she was investigated by the California Department of Health?"

Marcus opened the folder, his eyes scanning the documents. "Investigated for what?"

"Irregularities in medication distribution," Arthur lied smoothly, twisting the administrative paperwork of a overcrowded, underfunded clinic into something sinister. "She was cleared, of course, but the record exists. More importantly... look at the timeline. She claims Kenji Watanabe died two months before the child was born. But there is no official paternity test on file in the state of California."

Marcus’s eyes lit up with dangerous realization. "No DNA test?"

"None," Arthur sneered. "Kenji Watanabe died in a hospice without legal representation. Lila Bennett simply declared him the father on the birth certificate. She walked into Richard’s house eleven months ago as a maid, learned about his past guilt over Japan, and used a three-year-old girl to pull off the greatest corporate shakedown in Seattle history."

Marcus let out a cruel, booming laugh. "A scam. The great visionary Richard Callahan was duped by a gold-digging nurse!"

"If we file a legal petition in family court on behalf of the Callahan Global Shareholder Alliance," Arthur explained, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, "demanding a mandatory court-ordered DNA test for the child and challenging Lila Bennett’s legal guardianship of the trust... the scandal will destroy Richard’s credibility. The board will have no choice but to remove him for gross negligence, and we can void the equity transfer."

Marcus Voss smiled—a cold, predatory expression. "Draft the petition, Arthur. Let’s see how powerful the great titan is when the whole world finds out he was played for a fool."

Two days later, the storm hit.

A prominent national tabloid published a explosive headline: THE THREE-BILLION-DOLLAR MAID SCAM: CALLAHAN GLOBAL CEO FOOLED BY UNPROVEN HEIR?

By noon, news trucks were parked outside the security gates of the Callahan estate. Legal notices were delivered to David Miller’s office, demanding an immediate court injunction to freeze the Watanabe Trust pending a court-mandated paternity investigation filed by Arthur Vance and the Shareholder Alliance.

Inside the study, Lila sat on the sofa, holding the morning newspaper, her hands shaking uncontrollably as tears streamed down her face.

"They're calling me a fraud, Richard," Lila sobbed, her chest heaving. "They're saying... they're saying I invented Kenji... that I brought Emma here to steal your money..."

Richard stood by the window, watching the satellite trucks parked outside his gates. His face was stone, his jaw set in a line of pure, lethal anger.

He walked over to Lila, sinking down beside her on the sofa, placing his arm around her shoulders, pulling her close.

"Listen to me, Lila," Richard said, his voice deep, steady, and fierce. "Look at me."

Lila lifted her tear-stained face.

"I don't care what Arthur Vance files," Richard said, his hazel eyes burning with absolute certainty. "I don't care what the tabloids write. I know who Kenji was. I know who Emma is. I felt her touch my cheek. I heard her speak his words. No legal paper in the world can change the truth."

"But the court order..." Lila whispered. "They want a DNA test, Richard. They want to dig up Kenji's records... they want to parade Emma through a courtroom like a spectacle!"

Richard reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. He dialed a number on speaker.

"David," Richard said when his attorney answered. "Set up a press conference at the Callahan Global Auditorium for two o'clock today."

"Richard," David Miller warned through the speaker. "Arthur Vance has four media outlets on his side. They are going to push the lack of formal paternity documents hard."

"Let them push, David," Richard said softly, looking over at Lila, then toward the doorway where Emma was happily playing with her wooden blocks in the hallway. "Because at two o'clock... we are going to end Arthur Vance permanently."
