Chapter 3 - The Golden Cage

The Dearborn estate sat behind twelve-foot wrought-iron gates flanked by private security guards, nestled amidst ten acres of heavily wooded private property on the North Shore. When the Maybach rolled past the stone pillars and swept up the grand circular drive, Emma pressed her face against the tinted glass, her breath hitching in her throat. The sprawling limestone mansion looked less like a home and more like a European royal palace.

As she stepped out of the vehicle, a pair of heavy double doors opened, and an older woman stepped forward with open arms.

"Emma, my dear child!" Elena Falcone beamed, looking remarkably different from the frail, frightened woman who had worn taped shoes at Rosalind’s just days earlier. She wore a tailored cashmere dress adorned with pearls, radiating an effortless, commanding elegance.

Emma staggered back a step, blinking in utter disbelief. "You... you're the woman from the restaurant. The clothes... the taped shoes..."

"A necessary theatrical production," Matteo’s gravelly voice echoed from the foyer as he walked out, leaning heavily on a carved mahogany cane, though his posture was much straighter than it had been downtown. "Forgive the deception, Miss Frost. We needed to see how the world looked through your eyes."

Before Emma could process the shock of being manipulated by two billionaires playing dress-up, the heavy silence in the grand foyer shifted.

Footsteps descended the sweeping curved staircase.

Dante Falcone entered the light.

He wore a dark, bespoke charcoal suit that accentuated his tall, athletic frame. His dark hair was neatly styled, and his sharp, arresting gaze locked onto Emma instantly. There was an elemental gravity to him—an aura of supreme, unyielding power that made the air feel suddenly thin.

Emma felt rooted to the Persian rug. She had spent her entire life invisible, overlooked, and pushed to the margins. Standing before the apex predator of Chicago’s underworld, she suddenly felt entirely exposed.

"So," Dante said, his voice smooth and deep, carrying a faint, dangerous hum. "This is the woman who threw herself in front of a flying plate of pasta to protect my mother."

Emma swallowed hard, her pride suddenly overriding her intimidation. She lifted her chin, meeting his dark gaze head-on. "If I had known your parents were billionaires playing poverty tourism for amusement, I probably would have saved my apron."

A sharp, unexpected bark of laughter broke from Matteo’s lips. Elena clapped her hands together in sheer delight.

Dante didn't laugh. Instead, a slow, intense smirk curved his lips as he descended the final step and stopped just two feet away from her. He towered over her, his presence intoxicating and overwhelming.

"Spicy," Dante murmured, his dark eyes scanning her face. "I like that. Most people in this city shake when they enter this house. You walk in here like you're inspecting our plumbing."

"I have an eviction notice on my kitchen counter, Mr. Falcone," Emma replied, her voice steady despite her racing pulse. "I have a brother who needs insulin, and I lost my livelihood because your mother wanted to test human empathy like a science experiment. You’ll have to forgive me if I’m not terribly impressed by your chandeliers."

Dante’s expression darkened slightly, a flash of genuine respect flickering in his obsidian eyes. He turned to Arthur Vance, who stood quietly near the entrance.

"Clear her apartment debt, settle her landlord's claim, and transfer fifty thousand dollars into Leo’s medical trust immediately," Dante commanded without breaking eye contact with Emma.

"Wait—no!" Emma protested, stepping back. "I didn't come here for charity! I don't want your money!"

"It's not charity," Dante said, stepping closer until she could feel the clean, expensive scent of cedar and leather radiating from him. "It's an investment. My parents chose you, Emma. And in this family, when the Falcones choose, there is no escape."

"Escape from what?" Emma breathed, her breath catching.

"From me," Dante replied softly. "You're going to marry me, Emma Frost. And together, we're going to burn the corrupt foundations of this city to ash."
