Chapter 3 - The Alleyways of Mayfair

The rain in London had turned into a slashing sleet by the time Claire emerged from the Green Park Underground station.

The wind whipped her dark hair loose from its knot, plastering wet strands across her face as she ran through the narrow, cobbled alleys behind Berkeley Square. The streets were slick with wet leaves and grease, but Claire knew every brick, every delivery door, and every cut-through in Mayfair. She had walked these streets at five in the morning for six years to buy fresh flowers for the Ashford estate.

Her lungs burned like fire, but she didn't slow down.

Twenty-five minutes, she repeated in her head like a mantra. Oliver has twenty-five minutes.

She reached the back entrance of the Ashford Foundation Medical Annex—a three-story brick Georgian building tucked behind a quiet mews. It housed the private laboratory where Ashford Global tested medical diagnostic kits before shipping them to their corporate mining camps in Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Claire slid her brass key into the lock of the heavy green security door.

The lock clicked open. She stepped inside, locking the door behind her, her wet shoes squeaking against the polished concrete floor.

The building was dark, lit only by the green emergency exit signs.

Claire didn't waste time turning on the overhead lights. She sprinted down the basement stairs to the cold-storage pharmacy room. She pulled a digital access keycard from her pocket—a master pass given to her six months ago by the estate manager—and swiped it against the stainless steel keypad of the pharmaceutical vault.

BEEP.

The heavy steel door unlocked with a pneumatic hiss.

Claire pulled open the vault door. The temperature inside was a freezing four degrees Celsius. Rows of labeled glass vials, vaccine boxes, and sterile surgical kits sat on wire shelves under fluorescent lighting.

She moved directly to Shelf 4B: WHO RESTRICTED MEDICATIONS.

There, sitting in a clear acrylic box, were three gold-stamped packages of FEXINIDAZOLE – 600MG TABLETS and two vials of MELARSOPROL INJECTION.

"Thank God," Claire whispered, her breath misting in the cold air.

She pulled a insulated thermal pouch from her bag, packed the medication vials inside alongside two ice packs, and sealed the zipper shut.

CRASH!

A loud, heavy sound echoed from the ground floor above her head.

Claire froze.

The sound was unmistakable: the heavy green security door at the back entrance had been forced open.

Footsteps—heavy, deliberate, and unhurried—resounded through the ceiling boards above the basement stairs.

"Check the cold room!" a harsh, rough voice with a heavy East European accent barked from the top of the stairs. "The girl is inside! Julian said she has the foundation keys!"

Claire’s heart leaped into her throat.

Julian, she thought, her blood turning to ice. Julian sent them. He doesn't want Oliver to receive the cure.

She backed away from the pharmacy vault, retreating into the shadow of the secondary storage aisle where the foundation kept archived paper files and old laboratory equipment.

Two men stepped down the basement stairs. They wore dark rain coats, baseball caps pulled low over their faces, and dark leather gloves. One of them held a heavy steel crowbar; the other had his hand tucked inside his jacket in a way that clearly indicated a concealed firearm.

"Claire!" the man with the crowbar called out, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. "Don't make this difficult! Leave the thermal bag on the table and walk away! Mr. Julian Ashford just wants to make sure the foundation inventory stays... consistent!"

Claire crouched behind a heavy steel cabinet filled with archived shipping manifests.

She reached into her handbag. She didn't have a gun or a knife. All she had was her student dissection kit, her notebook, and a four-ounce bottle of ninety-nine percent pure laboratory isopropyl alcohol she used for sterilizing her microscope lenses.

She looked at the heavy electrical circuit breaker panel mounted on the wall six inches to her left.

Think, Claire told herself, forcing her breathing into a slow, quiet rhythm. Use what you know.

She uncapped the isopropyl alcohol bottle, soaking a heavy rag she pulled from her cleaning kit. She reached up, slowly unscrewing the glass protective globe covering the basement overhead light bulb, exposing the hot, bare tungsten filament.

She tossed the alcohol-soaked rag directly across the exposed wiring of the breaker box!

SPARK! FLASH!

A violent blue arc of electrical flame ignited the alcohol!

BOOM!

The main circuit breaker blew with a deafening pop! The entire basement was instantly plunged into pitch black darkness!

"What the hell?!" one of the men yelled, a loud bang sounding as he stumbled over a metal supply crate in the dark.

Claire didn't hesitate.

She knew the basement layout blindfolded. She moved silently through the dark, using her left hand to guide herself along the cold metal shelving. She slipped past the two disoriented men, her rubber-soled shoes making no sound against the concrete.

She reached the basement stairs, sprinted up the steps three at a time, and burst through the ground floor entrance.

"She’s upstairs!" a voice yelled from below. "Catch her!"

Claire ran into the main office area on the ground floor. The front entrance to the street was deadbolted with a heavy digital keypad, but the fire exit in the archival room led directly into the side mews.

As she ran past Julian’s private corporate desk in the annex office, her elbow knocked a tall stack of leather-bound folders off the counter.

The folders hit the floor, spilling dozens of printed documents across her path.

Claire paused for a fraction of a second, aiming her pocket flashlight down at the scattered papers to make sure she didn't trip over them.

Her flashlight beam caught a bold, red-stamped header on a shipping manifest from three months ago:

ASHFORD GLOBAL LOGISTICS – ZAMBIA MINING DIVISION

CARGO: COPPER CONCENTRATE & UNMODIFIED BACTERIAL CULTURES

DESTINATION: HARLEY STREET RESEARCH INC.

AUTHORIZING OFFICER: ASHFORD, JULIAN.

Tucked beneath the manifest was a lab report bearing a biohazard symbol:

TEST SUBJECT: CANINE / INFECTED WITH T. B. RHODESIENSE.

NOTE: HIGHLY TRANSMISSLE VIA VECTOR INJECTION. BITE SIMULATION SUCCESSFUL.

Claire gasped, her eyes wide with unimaginable horror.

This wasn't an accidental infection Oliver picked up in the wilderness of Zambia.

Julian had deliberately imported the live parasite vector to London. He had poisoned his own nephew to secure his position as sole heir to Ashford Global Logistics.

"There she is!" a voice yelled as the basement door slammed open behind her!

Claire grabbed the biohazard report, jammed it into her bag alongside the medicine, threw open the emergency fire exit, and vanished into the wet, foggy night.
