Chapter 3 - The Threat at the Gate

The move into the west wing transformed the atmosphere of the mansion almost overnight.
Where cold marble and quiet corridors used to reign, there was now the soft sound of children's songs echoing from the garden, the sweet scent of Maria's home-cooked meals wafting through the kitchen, and small colorful toys occasionally left on the polished hardwood floors.
For Ethan, coming home from high-stress meetings at Cole Enterprises ceased to be a chore. He found himself looking forward to the evenings. He began taking his dinner in the kitchen instead of the formal dining room, sitting across from Maria while Sophia enthusiastically recounted her daily adventures with Noodle the rabbit.
Slowly, the walls between Ethan and Maria began to crumble. He learned about her dream of opening her own small bakery, her love for traditional Mexican recipes handed down from her grandmother, and her fierce, unconditional devotion to her daughter. In turn, Ethan opened up about his own past—the overwhelming pressure of taking over his late father’s crumbling empire at twenty-two, the betrayal of friends who only cared about his money, and the profound loneliness that had consumed him ever since.
"You built a fortress to protect yourself," Maria said quietly one night as they sat on the back patio, watching Sophia sleep inside through the glass doors. "But a fortress isn't a home, Ethan. It's just a prison with better security."
Ethan looked at her, the dim patio light highlighting the gentle curves of her face. "Maybe I was just waiting for someone to show me how to open the doors."
Their eyes locked, a powerful, unspoken emotional pull drawing them closer. But just as Ethan reached out to place his hand over hers, a loud crash echoed from the front driveway, followed by the blare of a car horn and flashing cameras.
Ethan instantly stood up, stepping in front of Maria as security guards rushed past the patio toward the front gate.
"What's happening?" Maria asked, panic rising in her voice.
"Stay inside with Sophia," Ethan commanded firmly, his voice returning to its icy corporate edge. "Don't come out."
Ethan strode to the front entrance, where his head of security, David, was holding back a crowd of pushy tabloid journalists and paparazzi who had gathered outside the main gates. Flashes blinded the night sky.
"Mr. Cole! Is it true you're harboring a fugitive's ex-wife?" a reporter shouted through the iron bars.
"Ethan! How will the Cole Enterprises board react to your live-in relationship with your maid?" another voice yelled. "Is this a publicity stunt or an abuse of power?"
Ethan’s blood ran cold. He turned to David. "How did they find out?"
"Someone leaked a full dossier to the press an hour ago, sir," David said tightly, holding a tablet. "Photos of Ms. Delgado, her ex-husband's criminal record, and images of her living in your guest wing. It's spreading like wildfire across local news."
Before Ethan could process the betrayal, his phone buzzed violently in his pocket. It was Victoria Sterling.
Ethan answered, stepping back into the quiet foyer. "Victoria."
"Have you seen the news?" Victoria’s voice was triumphant yet sharp with malice. "I warned you, Ethan! I told you bringing that trash into your home would ruin you! Marcus Vance is already calling an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning to challenge your leadership. They're going to vote you out on grounds of personal misconduct and reputational risk!"
Ethan’s eyes narrowed into slits of steel. "Did you leak this story, Victoria?"
A heavy silence fell over the line for two seconds before Victoria responded smoothly. "I did what was necessary to save this company from your emotional insanity. Throw her out tonight, release a statement saying she was an unvetted employee who manipulated you, and you can still save the Riverfront deal."
"If you ever touch my personal life again, Victoria, I will dismantle everything you own," Ethan said, his voice terrifyingly calm. He hung up the phone before she could reply.
He turned around and saw Maria standing at the top of the grand staircase. She had heard enough. Tears streamed down her cheeks, her face pale with humiliation and fear.
"They know," she whispered. "Hector knows where we are now."
"Maria, listen to me—" Ethan began, taking two steps at a time up the stairs.
"No, Ethan!" Maria cried, taking a step back. "This is what happens when I try to believe things can be normal! Your world is too dangerous, and my past is too dirty! I brought this disaster to your doorstep. I am taking Sophia and leaving tonight."
"You are not leaving!" Ethan shouted, catching her by the shoulders. His voice broke, revealing the desperate terror of a man about to lose the only real warmth he had found in a decade. "If you walk out those gates, Hector will find you, and the press will destroy you. Stay here. Let me protect you."
"Why?" Maria sobbed, looking into his eyes. "Why would you risk your company, your fortune, your entire life for a maid and her child?"
May you like
Ethan brought his face close to hers, his thumbs gently wiping away her tears. "Because before you walked into this house, I had everything and nothing at all. You and Sophia gave me a reason to live, Maria. I am not letting anyone take that away."
Maria stared at him, overwhelmed by the fierce sincerity in his eyes. But before she could answer, the security alarm at the rear perimeter of the property began to wail, piercing through the night like a siren of doom.
