Chapter 4 - Unmasking the FiancéeWhen Daniel and Grace returned to the estate late that evening, the house was eerily quiet. The wedding catalogs that usually littered the coffee table had been swept aside. Vanessa was sitting in the formal study, pouring herself a glass of amber scotch, a habit she usually reserved for high-stress corporate negotiations.

She looked up as Daniel walked in, a white bandage over his eyebrow, looking remarkably composed.

"Daniel! Thank God. I was worried sick," she rushed forward, attempting to throw her arms around his neck.

Daniel sidestepped her smoothly, walking straight to the oak desk where his laptop sat plugged into a multi-port docking station.

"Save the performance, Vanessa," he said, his voice echoing in the wood-paneled room.

Vanessa froze, her hands hovering in mid-air. Her eyes hardened, the softness of the grieving fiancée evaporating instantly. "What are you talking about?"

"I’m talking about the platinum tennis bracelet," Daniel said, opening his laptop and typing a quick password. "The one you claimed was stolen right off the side table during your wedding committee lunch."

"It was stolen!" Vanessa snapped, her voice rising. "Are you really interrogating me right now? I almost watched you die on the foyer floor this morning, and you come in here cross-examining me over a piece of family jewelry?"

"Grace saw you packing it into a mailing envelope addressed to an Atlanta P.O. box the morning before the luncheon," Daniel said evenly, turning the monitor around so she could see the tracking records he had pulled from his corporate shipping account using her credit card statement numbers. "And as it turns out, my security consultant ran the address on that P.O. box this afternoon. It belongs to a private liquidation broker who specializes in fencing high-end estate pieces without a paper trail."

Color drained entirely from Vanessa’s face. She looked at the screen, then at Daniel, her lips parting as she tried to calculate a lie. When none came, her expression twisted into something ugly and defensive.

"You’re spying on me?" she hissed.

"I’m protecting my assets, Vanessa," Daniel replied, leaning back in his leather chair. "Which brings me to the second reason I had my forensic accountant look into your background this afternoon. It turns out Whitfield Development isn't the only thing you’ve been interested in acquiring. Your previous engagement to a real estate developer in Savannah ended rather abruptly when he filed for bankruptcy right after transferring half his commercial holdings into your name."

Vanessa slammed her scotch glass down onto the desk, amber liquid splashing across the polished mahogany. "You arrogant bastard! You investigated me?"

"You were going to marry me, Vanessa," Daniel said, standing up to tower over her. "I invest millions of dollars into commercial construction projects based on soil samples, stress tests, and financial audits. Why wouldn't I run a background check on the woman I was about to give half my empire to?"

"I loved you!" she screamed, dropping all pretense of southern elegance.

"No," Daniel said coldly. "You loved the marble floors. You loved the lake house. You loved the security of my name. But the moment something broke—the moment you thought I was bleeding to death on the floor—you didn't rush to save me. You rushed to calculate how my death would affect your social standing and your inheritance."

Vanessa laughed—a harsh, hysterical sound. "And what? You’re going to keep your little maid? Is that it? You’re going to replace a woman of your own class with someone who scrubs your toilets?"

"Grace has more integrity in her little finger than you have in your entire body," Daniel said, walking to the double doors of the study and pulling them open.

Grace was standing quietly in the hallway, having waited just out of sight in case she was needed.

"Grace," Daniel called out.

She stepped into the study, her posture straight and respectful.

"Effective immediately," Daniel said, looking at both women, "Miss Cole’s belongings are to be boxed up and shipped to her parents' estate in Charleston. Any attempt on her part to access this property will result in immediate trespassing charges and a civil suit for insurance fraud regarding the missing bracelet."

Vanessa grabbed her designer handbag from the sofa, her eyes blazing with pure hatred. "You’ll regret this, Daniel. You’re a lonely, cold-hearted machine. No one will ever truly love a man who treats his life like a balance sheet."

With that, she stormed out of the study, her heels clicking furiously against the marble foyer until the heavy front door slammed shut behind her.
