Chapter 4 - The Aftermath of the Gala

The morning after the engagement gala, Alder House did not look like an estate that had just suffered a social earthquake. By 7:00 AM, the catering vans had departed through the north gate, the crystal chandeliers had been dimmed, and the grand ballroom had been restored to its silent, museum-like perfection. The sun rose over Lake Forest in a brilliant, clear yellow, turning the frost on the maple trees into thousands of tiny, glittering diamonds that didn't cost a cent.

Camille Harper sat at the small stainless-steel table in the staff kitchen, a hot mug of coffee held between her palms. She hadn't slept more than two hours. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Victoria’s manicured fingers dragging the gold locket out of the gray uniforms, and she felt the terrifying, cold weight of what her life would have looked like if Mason Aldridge hadn't been a man who analyzed dust.

The door to the kitchen swung open with a soft, hydraulic click, and Ruth Calder walked in. The estate manager had traded her formal gray suit for a comfortable tweed jacket, her silver-streaked hair held back by a simple tortoiseshell clip. She carried a thick leather portfolio under her arm.

"Morning, Camille," Ruth said, setting the portfolio down on the counter and pulling up a stool across from her.

"Good morning, Ruth," Camille said, her posture instinctively straightening. "Is... is Mr. Aldridge still on the property? I need to know if there are any specific instructions for the cleaning rotation in the west suite."

"The west suite is currently locked, Camille," Ruth said, her eyes warm but deeply serious. "Mr. Aldridge left for the Asteron headquarters downtown at five this morning. He has an emergency board meeting with the corporate legal team. The Langley family has already withdrawn their secondary investment options for the logistics software launch."

Camille felt a cold knot of guilt tighten in her stomach. "This is because of me. If I hadn't been in the staff wing—"

"Stop that," Ruth said firmly, her hand reaching out to tap the stainless-steel table between them. "This happened because Victoria Langley was a viper who thought her father’s bank account allowed her to manufacture crimes. If she hadn't tried to frame you tonight, she would have found another way to poison this house next month. Mr. Aldridge knows that. He’s a security engineer, Camille. He doesn't fix symptoms; he removes vulnerabilities."

Ruth opened the leather portfolio, sliding a crisp, white document across the table toward Camille. The top of the page carried the embossed blue seal of Asteron Systems Management Division.

"What is this?" Camille asked, looking at the columns of numbers and the word Reassignment printed at the top.

"Mr. Aldridge spent the hour before his departure rewriting the operational balance sheet for the estate," Ruth explained. "Effective immediately, you are no longer the junior live-in housekeeper for Alder House. The position has been abolished."

Camille’s breath caught in her throat, her fingers tightening around her coffee mug until her knuckles hurt. "I... I’m fired?"

"Read the secondary clause, Camille," Ruth said with a rare, bright smile that completely softened her strict features. "You are being reassigned as the Internal Operations Coordinator for the estate. Your duties will involve managing the vendor contracts, overseeing the security interface logs for the residential wings, and coordinating the household budget directly with me. The salary is sixty-five thousand a year, full medical benefits, and a dedicated education stipend for Lily’s future schooling."

Camille stared at the document, the print blurring before her eyes as a sudden, overwhelming wave of relief washed over her. The salary was nearly double what she had been earning as a maid. It meant she could finally stop surviving; she could live.

"I... I don't know anything about security logs, Ruth," Camille whispered, a single tear escaping her eye and hitting the edge of the paper.

"You know how to tell the truth, Camille," Ruth said softly, standing up from the stool and smoothing down her jacket. "And around here, that’s the highest technical qualification available. Sign the contract before noon. Mr. Aldridge likes his files organized before the markets close."

As Ruth walked out of the kitchen, Camille looked through the large bay window that faced the rear gardens.

Out on the wide, frost-covered lawn, Lily was running in long, looping circles around a massive maple tree, her pink winter coat bright against the gray stone walls of the estate. She was laughing, her small hands raised like paws as she chased a squirrel into the brush.

She wasn't a maid’s daughter hiding in the staff quarters anymore. She was a three-year-old girl who had just rewritten the future of Alder House with six simple words.
