Chapter 5 - The Truth Comes to Light

“Vanessa! What in God’s name are you doing?” Grant’s voice was thunderous as he reached them, grabbing Vanessa by the arm and pulling her away from Nora with unyielding force.

“Grant! Thank goodness!” Vanessa’s face instantly transformed, shifting from cold malice to trembling, tearful victimization in a heartbeat. She pointed a shaking finger at Nora. “She—she stole from the safe! I caught her trying to sneak out with corporate documents and flash drives containing your private encryption keys! When I confronted her, she threatened me!”

Grant didn't look at Vanessa. His piercing gray eyes were fixed entirely on Nora, who stood shivering in the pouring rain, clutching her bruised arm.

“Is that true, Nora?” Grant asked, his voice low and intensely focused.

Before Nora could answer, the heavy front doors opened again, and Miles Avery stepped out onto the porch, flanked by two private security guards and Danny Falcone, the estate’s head of security. Miles took one look at Grant holding Vanessa, and then at Nora, and his face drained of all color.

“Grant, don't listen to her,” Miles interjected quickly, stepping down into the rain with a frantic edge to his voice. “The cleaning woman is unstable. She’s obviously working with an outside competitor. We need to call the police immediately and—!”

“Shut up, Miles,” Grant said without turning around.

The single sentence carried the crushing weight of a federal indictment.

Grant reached into his pants pocket, pulled out his smartphone, and tapped the screen. A crisp, clear audio recording began playing through the phone’s external speaker, echoing loudly across the wet driveway.

“Once the wedding is official and the trust is legally transferred under your sole administration, liquidating the remaining assets will take forty-eight hours...”

Vanessa’s breath hitched. She stumbled backward, staring at Grant as if he were a ghost.

“I didn't leave my safe open by accident, Vanessa,” Grant said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “And I didn't hire an IT auditor to check the Northline accounts because of a glitch. My security team flagged anomalous data transfers originating from this estate three days ago. All I needed to know was who was holding the dagger behind my back.”

Grant turned his gaze slowly to Miles. “And you... you thought you could use a proxy marriage to drain my company dry while I played the doting fiancé.”

Miles swallowed hard, taking a step back toward the porch. “Grant, we can discuss this in the study—legal terms, settlements—!”

“There is nothing to discuss,” Grant interrupted. He looked at Danny Falcone. “Danny, escort Mr. Avery and Ms. Sterling off my property. Hand them over to the federal marshals waiting outside the front gates. Tell them the warrants are already signed.”

“No! You can’t do this!” Vanessa shrieked, lunging forward, but Danny’s massive frame blocked her path instantly, his hand resting firmly on his holster.

Within minutes, the flashing blue and red lights of federal vehicles illuminated Graystone Manor, turning the storm into a chaotic ballet of justice. Vanessa and Miles were handcuffed and led away into the freezing rain, their grand conspiracy dissolving into handcuffs and ignominy.

When the commotion finally subsided, only the sound of the rain and the low hum of the estate’s backup generators remained.

Grant stood alone in the driveway, drenched to the skin, looking down at Nora.

“Are you alright?” he asked, stepping closer and unbuttoning his soaked dress shirt to drape it over Nora’s shivering shoulders.

Nora pulled the warm fabric tight around her, blinking against the rain. “I’m... I’m fine, Mr. Holloway. But your engagement party—”

“Can go straight to hell,” Grant interrupted with a faint, wry smile. He reached down into his pocket and pulled out the flash drive Nora had risked her safety to protect. “You saved my company, Nora. And more importantly, you saved me from making the biggest mistake of my life.”
