Chapter 5 - The Unmasking at the Boardroom

At 9:00 AM the following morning, the Grand Boardroom of Whitlock Global was packed to capacity.

Twelve senior board members, four legal teams, and a dozen high-society journalists sat around the forty-foot mahogany conference table.

At the head of the table sat Lady Vivienne, dressed in her finest navy suit, smiling warmly as Eliza sat beside her. Adrian stood at his grandmother’s right hand, looking calm, sharp, and immovable.

Aunt Beatrice stood near the door, flanked by Lord Vance, Lucinda, and two uniformed London police officers.

“Before we sign the final voting share transfer documents,” Aunt Beatrice announced loudly, her voice ringing with triumphant malice across the silent room, “I am forced to interrupt these proceedings on grounds of massive criminal fraud!”

The board members gasped. Journalists instantly raised their cameras!

Lady Vivienne frowned. “Beatrice, what is the meaning of this theater?”

“The meaning, Vivienne,” Beatrice sneered, stepping forward and pointing a finger straight at Eliza, “is that the creature sitting beside you is an imposter! She is not an heiress from Cornwall! She is Eliza Moore—a common domestic servant who was scrubbing rugs in this very house four days ago!”

Lord Vance stepped forward, tossing a thick dossier of certified public records onto the center of the table.

“These are her real birth records from Truro!” Lord Vance declared smugly. “Her mother is a washerwoman! She tricked you, Lady Vivienne! She and Adrian concocted this fake engagement to manipulate you into signing over your controlling shares!”

Lady Vivienne looked at the documents on the table. Then she looked at Eliza.

Eliza sat still, her chest heaving, holding her breath. She didn't look at the press or the board members. She looked at the frail old woman who had given her so much kindness.

“Is this true, Adrian?” Lady Vivienne asked quietly, her voice trembling slightly.

Before Adrian could speak, Beatrice interrupted viciously. “And that’s not all! Ten minutes ago, police officers searched Miss Moore’s old staff locker in the basement! They found this!”

The police officer behind Beatrice stepped forward, holding up a clear evidence bag containing the dazzling, thirty-million-pound Whitlock Sapphire necklace!

“She is a thief and a fraud!” Lucinda shrieked triumphantly from the doorway. “Arrest her!”

The boardroom erupted into chaos! Camera flashes exploded like lightning strikes! Board members shouted in outrage!

Through the deafening noise, Adrian Whitlock did not move an inch.

He took a slow, deliberate sip of his water. Then he reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out a small remote control, and pressed a button.

The massive motorized shades over the boardroom windows descended, plunging the room into darkness. Simultaneously, the large digital projection screen on the wall flickered to life.

“Before the officers execute any arrest,” Adrian’s voice boomed through the room’s sound system, cold and clear as broken ice, “perhaps we should watch a short video recorded at 11:30 PM last night.”

The video played on the forty-foot screen in high-definition 4K.

The screen showed Lady Vivienne’s private medical cabinet. A figure stepped into the frame, holding a syringe.

It was Aunt Beatrice.

The video clearly showed Beatrice opening Lady Vivienne’s digitalis bottle, extracting half the prescribed heart medication, and replacing it with a concentrated saline-toxin solution designed to induce a fatal cardiac arrest.

The boardroom went dead silent.

Beatrice’s face turned the color of ashes. She stumbled backward against the wall. “No... no! That’s... that’s a deepfake! That’s fake!”

“And at 6:00 AM this morning,” Adrian continued smoothly, pressing the remote again, “our security cameras in the basement staff corridor captured this.”

A second video played.

It showed Lucinda Vance sneaking into the dark basement staff room, pulling the Whitlock Sapphire from her coat, and stuffing it deep into Eliza’s old locker.

Lucinda let out a high-pitched, hysterical shriek, covering her face as every camera in the room turned toward her!

“Detective Reed,” Adrian said, turning his icy gaze toward the lead Scotland Yard detective who had just stepped through the double doors with six armed officers. “You have the warrants.”

“Beatrice Whitlock, Lucinda Vance, Lord William Vance,” Detective Reed announced loudly, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. “You are under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit medical assassination, grand theft, and evidence tampering.”

The police officers moved with blinding speed, grabbing Beatrice and Lucinda, snapping steel handcuffs over their wrists as they wept and screamed in absolute disgrace!

“Adrian! Please! I’m your aunt!” Beatrice wailed as she was dragged out of the room. “Vivienne! Tell them!”

Lady Vivienne didn't even look at her sister-in-law. She sat frozen, watching her greedy family members being hauled away to prison.

When the heavy doors finally slammed shut, leaving the boardroom in breathless silence, Lady Vivienne turned slowly toward Eliza.

The room held its breath. The journalists leaned forward, waiting for the final collapse of the dynasty.

Lady Vivienne looked at Eliza’s pale, trembling face. Then, to everyone’s utter disbelief, the seventy-eight-year-old matriarch let out a long, quiet sigh... and smiled.

“My dear Eliza,” Lady Vivienne said softly, her eyes shining with deep, gentle wisdom. “Did you really think I didn't know you were a maid?”

Eliza gasped, her hazel eyes widening in sheer shock. “My Lady... you... you knew?”

Lady Vivienne chuckled softly, reaching out to gently pat Eliza’s hand.

“My dear, I have owned this estate for fifty years,” the old woman said, her voice filled with profound warmth. “Do you really think I don't recognize the hands of a woman who works for a living? The first time I touched your fingers in that bathroom, I felt the callouses from scrubbing my own floors.”

She looked up at Adrian, then back at Eliza.

“No Cornish heiress would ever have hands like yours,” Lady Vivienne continued gently. “And no high-society woman would ever have looked at my grandson with such genuine, terrified honesty. I didn't care that you were a maid, Eliza. I cared that for the first time in ten years, my grandson brought a real human being into this cold house.”

Lady Vivienne picked up the gold pen from the table, pulled the 51% controlling stock transfer document toward herself, and signed her name in bold, sweeping strokes.

She slid the signed contract across the table to Adrian.

“The company is yours, Adrian,” Lady Vivienne declared, her voice ringing with absolute authority. “And as for my grandson’s fiancée... as far as I am concerned, she is the finest mistress this estate has ever seen.”

The boardroom erupted into thunderous, standing applause! Journalists snapped photos of the historic moment, while board members rushed forward to congratulate the new head of Whitlock Global!

Through the chaos, Eliza looked up at Adrian.

He was staring at her—not at the signed contract that secured his multi-billion-pound empire, but at her face.

He walked over to her chair, leaned down, and offered her his hand.

“Come with me,” Adrian whispered.
