Chapter 4 - The Custody Battle

Forty-eight hours later, the top floor of the Cook County Family Courthouse was locked down under heavy security.
Blake sat on the left side of the pristine courtroom, flanked by three of the highest-paid family law attorneys in the United States. Across the aisle sat Emma, Richard, and her legal representative.
The judge, a formidable woman named Honorable Brenda Harris, slammed her gavel onto the wooden desk.
"Mr. Harrington," Judge Harris began, looking over her half-moon glasses at Blake with profound disdain. "You have filed an emergency petition for immediate joint custody and a temporary restraining order against Mrs. Harrington relocating the children out of Illinois."
"That is correct, Your Honor," Blake’s lead attorney stood up. "My client was intentionally kept ignorant of the existence of his three biological sons for over four years. He is a billionaire philanthropist capable of providing unlimited resources, security, and elite education for the Harrington heirs."
"He abandoned us!" Emma stood up, unable to contain her outrage, despite her lawyer trying to pull her down. "Your Honor! He threw me out when I was pregnant! He accused me of infidelity without a shred of proof! He hasn't spent a single minute, spent a single dollar, or changed a single diaper for those boys!"
"Because you hid them from me!" Blake shouted, standing up from his table, his composure completely shattering. "You let me believe I had nothing! You let me live in an empty house for five years while my boys were calling another man 'Uncle'!"
"SILENCE!" Judge Harris slammed her gavel repeatedly, the loud cracks ringing off the wood-paneled walls. "Both of you, sit down!"
Blake and Emma slowly sat back down, their glares locked onto each other across the aisle, filled with an agonizing mix of fury, history, and unhealed pain.
Judge Harris reviewed the thick binder on her desk—specifically the medical records from the Mayo Clinic and the financial statements proving Emma had raised the boys without a cent of child support.
"Mr. Harrington," Judge Harris said, her voice cold and unyielding. "Your financial wealth does not give you the right to steamroll a mother who has successfully, lovingly, and independently raised three healthy boys. However, biologically and legally, you are their father."
Emma felt her heart drop into her stomach.
"I am granting Mr. Harrington supervised visitation rights," Judge Harris declared. "Two hours every Saturday, at Mrs. Harrington’s residence, supervised by a court-appointed child specialist and Mrs. Harrington herself. No press. No security teams. Just the father and his children."

Blake closed his eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath. It wasn't the total victory he had wanted, but it was a doorway.
"And Mrs. Harrington," Judge Harris added, looking at Emma. "Until the legal status of your marriage decree is finalized in New York, any formal marriage proceedings between you and Mr. Miller are strictly stayed."
