Chapter 3 - The Dark RoomThe police breach of the house was a blur of shouting and flashing lights. I stayed by the perimeter, my heart in my throat, until I saw an officer emerge from the back door carrying a small, trembling figure.

Evan.

I pushed past the tape. "Is he okay?"

The officer, a woman with a weary face, nodded. "He’s in shock, but he’s alive."

I ran to him. He was small, his eyes wide and vacant, his clothes damp from the rain. He didn't look at me; he looked toward the house. "Mrs. Price," he whispered. "He took her to the cellar."

My blood turned to ice. The police had cleared the main floor, but they hadn't mentioned a cellar. I looked at the lead officer. "There’s a cellar. Beneath the pantry."

The tactical team moved, their boots thundering against the hardwood. I stayed with Evan, wrapping my coat around him. He felt like a bird—fragile and desperate to fly away.
