Chapter 3 - Bound by Silk

Back in the upstairs dressing room of the Whitfield estate, the situation had deteriorated from malicious accusation to outright physical intimidation.

When Denise had attempted to leave the room to attend to her duties in the pantry, Vanessa had blocked the doorway with a manicured hand, her eyes flashing with wild, unhinged energy.

“You aren't going anywhere until the police arrive,” Vanessa had snapped.

“Ms. Cole, you cannot hold me here against my will,” Denise had replied firmly, trying to step past her.

That was when Vanessa had motioned to two private security guards she had hired independently for the wedding week—men who didn't know the estate protocols and were entirely dependent on Vanessa’s temporary authority. Before Denise could react, the two men had grabbed her arms, forcing her down into a carved wooden armchair near the vanity mirror.

“Get your hands off me!” Denise had protested, struggling against their grip.

“Hold her still,” Vanessa had ordered coldly, pulling a long, ivory silk wedding sash from one of the decorative dress boxes stacked against the wall. With quick, practiced cruelty, she wrapped the heavy fabric tightly around Denise’s wrists, binding them securely to the carved wooden arms of the chair.

Now, sitting in the suffocating silence of the dressing room while Vanessa stood over her smelling of champagne and cigarette smoke, Denise felt the full absurdity and humiliation of her position.

“You burned my ten-thousand-dollar dress,” Vanessa whispered for the third time, leaning close enough for Denise to catch the bitter scent of nicotine on her breath. “And when Richard gets home, I’m going to make sure you lose everything. Not just your job. Your reputation. Your home. Everything.”

Denise forced her chin up, locking her gaze onto the terrified, desperate core hiding behind Vanessa’s manicured mask.

“You know I didn't touch it, Vanessa,” Denise said, her voice entirely steady, which seemed to infuriate the bride even more. “You were out on the balcony smoking. You dropped the ash. The security camera recorded the entire thing from a dozen different angles.”

Vanessa flinched slightly at the mention of the camera, but quickly recovered her arrogant sneer.

“Nobody is going to look at that camera, Denise, because Vance isn't here, and the master server key is locked in a vault that only I know how to—'”

Click.

The crisp, mechanical sound of a heavy door unlocking echoed down the private corridor outside the dressing room.

Vanessa froze mid-sentence.

The heavy oak door swung open with a slow, deliberate creak.

Standing in the doorway was Richard Whitfield.

He didn't look like a groom returning home to a happy, peaceful household before his wedding day. He looked like an executioner. His five-thousand-dollar suit jacket was unbuttoned, his tie was slightly loosened, and his eyes were locked entirely on Vanessa with a cold, terrifying intensity that made the temperature in the room drop ten degrees.

Behind him stood Marcus Vance, the corporate counsel, flanked by two local police officers who had just arrived at the front gates.

Vanessa’s face drained of every drop of color, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.

“N-Nate... Richard!” Vanessa stammered, her voice instantly pivoting into its familiar, breathy, theatrical whine as she rushed toward him with outstretched arms. “Thank goodness you’re here! It’s absolute chaos! This woman—this ungrateful, unstable employee—went completely insane and destroyed my custom wedding gown! Look at it! She attacked me when I tried to stop her, and we had to restrain her for our own safety—”

Richard did not raise his arms to catch her. He didn't even flinch as she stopped inches from his chest.

Instead, he slowly raised his right hand.

In his palm was his iPhone, glowing brightly. The screen was paused on a crisp, high-definition video frame showing a blond woman standing on a private balcony with a lit cigarette in her hand, watching a glowing ember drift downward toward an ivory organza skirt.

“Tell me again, Vanessa,” Richard said, his voice terrifyingly quiet as it echoed off the silk-lined walls. “Who destroyed the dress?”
