Chapter 4 - The Price of Loyalty

The air in the sub-basement grew suffocatingly quiet, punctuated only by the low, rhythmic thrum of the emergency generators and the soft, labored breathing of my six-year-old son against my chest.

"Vance," I said, stepping slowly in front of Elena, positioning my body as a human shield between his men's rifles and Daniel. "This is between you and me. The boy has nothing to do with your lost weapons. The girl is a hospital worker. Let them walk out of here."

Viktor Vance let out a dry, chilling laugh that echoed off the damp concrete walls.

"You destroyed my family's legacy in the Black Sea, Gabriel," Vance said, his eyes narrowing into cold slits of black ice. "You froze my offshore accounts. You put my brother in a federal penitentiary for life. Did you really think I would grant you the dignity of a soldier's bargain?"

He took two slow, deliberate steps forward, his polished leather shoes clicking against the slick floor.

"You are going to unlock your encrypted tactical phone right now," Vance commanded, gesturing with his revolver. "You are going to transmit the master override codes for the seized container ships in Rotterdam to my satellite link. If you refuse... I will execute this young woman first, then your son, and finally leave you to bleed out on this filthy floor."

I looked down at my encrypted tactical phone secured to my chest harness. The override codes inside that phone governed four billion dollars in seized heavy weaponry, illegal armaments, and classified intelligence networks. If Vance regained control of those assets, thousands of innocent lives across Eastern Europe would be erased in a matter of weeks.

But if I refused... my son and Elena would die in front of my eyes.

"Colonel..." Elena whispered behind me, her voice trembling but surprisingly firm. "Don't do it. Don't give him those codes."

Vance's eyes snapped to Elena. A cruel smile touched his lips.

"Insolent little rat," Vance sneered, shifting his revolver from my chest directly toward Elena's face. "You should have stayed in your corner with your mop and bucket, girl. You chose to play hero. Now you pay the price."

His finger began to tighten around the trigger of his pearl-handled revolver.

In that split second, I didn't calculate tactical odds. I didn't weigh corporate or military consequences.

I lunged forward, placing my left shoulder directly into the line of fire while drawing my SIG Sauer with my right hand.

BANG!

Vance's heavy magnum round tore through my left shoulder blade, burning like white-hot iron as it passed straight through my upper body tissue. The force of the high-caliber impact knocked me back, sending a blinding wave of agony through my nervous system, but I maintained my grip on my weapon.

I fired twice from the floor.

The first round struck Vance's wrist, shattering his grip on the pearl-handled revolver and sending the weapon spinning across the floor. The second round struck the chest plate of the lead mercenary beside him, knocking him off balance.

"Fire!" Vance screamed, clutching his shattered wrist as he stumbled back behind his men. "Kill them all!"

Before the remaining three mercenaries could squeeze their triggers, the heavy reinforced concrete wall behind Vance exploded inward with a deafening roar!

A massive, armored tactical vehicle belonging to the United States Army Special Forces—having smashed directly through the sub-basement's external retaining wall from the street above—tore through the masonry in a cloud of brick, dust, and concrete debris!

"U.S. ARMY SPECIAL OPERATIONS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!" a booming voice roared over a tactical loudspeaker.

Flashbangs lit up the darkness in a rapid-fire sequence of blinding light and sound.

Dozens of heavily armed Rangers clad in full combat gear poured out of the rear of the armored vehicle, sweeping through the sub-basement like a storm of steel. In less than eight seconds, Vance's remaining mercenaries were pinned to the floor, disarmed, and secured in heavy zip-ties.

Vance tried to crawl away through the rubble toward an old maintenance drain, his clothes torn, his face covered in concrete dust and blood.

I stepped through the dust, my left arm hanging limp, blood soaking through my field jacket, but my right hand holding my weapon firm. I brought my boot down heavily onto Vance's chest, pinning the cartel leader to the floor.

"It's over, Vance," I said coldly, looking down at the man who had brought war to a children's hospital. "Your empire is gone. Your freedom is gone. You're going to spend the rest of your life in a dark cell where no one will ever hear your voice again."

"Curse you, Moretti..." Vance wheezed, spitting blood onto the concrete. "Curse you..."

Captain Miller, my second-in-command, rushed up to my side, his tactical visor raised, his expression filled with relief and concern.

"Colonel! Medical team is on site! We've secured the entire hospital. Sergeant Jackson is stable upstairs. The NYPD has locked down the surrounding five blocks."

"Get a medical team to my son immediately," I ordered, my voice fading as the blood loss from my shoulder began to take its toll. "And... treat this woman. She saved my son's life."

I turned back to look for Elena.

She was sitting on a wooden supply crate near the shattered wall, holding her injured arm, her face pale, surrounded by armed Rangers who were looking at her torn janitor's uniform with a mixture of awe and profound respect.

She looked up at me, a soft, weary smile breaking through the dirt and blood on her face.

"Is Daniel okay?" she asked softly, ignoring her own injuries entirely.

May you like

"He's safe, Elena," I said, stepping over to her, dropping to one knee despite the excruciating pain in my shoulder. "Because of you."

My vision flickered, edge with blackness, and I collapsed onto the cool concrete floor as the shouts of medical personnel echoed above us into the night.
