Chapter 5 - The Reckoning of the VulturesTime seemed to fracture.

In the fraction of a second before Marcus pulled the trigger, every instinct Nikolai had forged over a lifetime of syndicate warfare took over. He moved with explosive violence, lunging forward to put his own body between Belle and the barrel of the gun.
But Belle moved faster than anyone anticipated.
Years of managing a high-end luxury hotel during emergency drills, bomb threats, and sudden guest crises had trained her brain to bypass panic entirely.
Instead of freezing, she grabbed a heavy silver ice bucket from the VIP table and hurled it with terrifying accuracy directly into Marcus’s face.
Clang!
The heavy silver struck Marcus squarely across the bridge of his nose. The unexpected impact threw his aim off completely. His bullet slammed harmlessly into the wooden floorboards beside Nikolai’s shoe.
“Shoot him!” Marcus roared, stumbling back and clutching his bleeding nose.
Before Marcus’s mercenaries could raise their weapons to fire back, the glass dome above the ballroom shattered.
Ropes dropped through the opening like falling rain.
Fourteen heavily armed tactical operatives—Nikolai’s elite private security strike force, led by David—rappelled down from the ceiling into the center of the room with breathtaking speed.
Flash-bang grenades detonated in rapid succession.
Flash! Bang!
Blinding white light and concussive sound filled the ballroom. Marcus’s mercenaries dropped their weapons, clutching their ears and falling to the marble floor in disoriented heaps.
Nikolai didn't hesitate. He crossed the remaining distance to Marcus in three strides, grabbed him by the throat, and slammed him against a marble pillar with enough force to crack the stone.
“You brought guns to my city,” Nikolai whispered, his voice trembling with a dark, lethal rage. “You threatened the woman under my roof.”
Marcus choked, his hands clawing weakly at Nikolai’s iron grip. “You... you can’t touch me... federal authorities—”
“Federal authorities are already raiding your warehouses as we speak,” Nikolai interrupted coldly. “Your operations are gone. Your accounts are frozen. And you are going to spend the rest of your natural life in a maximum-security hole.”
With a final, contemptuous shove, Nikolai dropped Marcus to the floor. The syndicate boss slumped unconscious against the base of the pillar.
The ballroom was dead silent, save for the ringing ears of the terrified socialites huddled beneath the tables.
Nikolai turned around.
His eyes scanned the room frantically until they found Belle. She was standing beside the VIP table, breathing heavily, her midnight-blue gown slightly rumpled, but her posture completely unbroken.
Nikolai crossed the room in two strides, pulling her into his arms and holding her so tightly against his chest that she could feel the violent pounding of his heart.
“Are you hurt?” he demanded, his voice cracking with an emotion he rarely allowed himself to show. “Belle, tell me you’re not hurt.”
“I’m fine, Nikolai,” she whispered, resting her forehead against his shoulder. “I’m completely fine.”
Behind them, police sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder by the second as local authorities and federal agents arrived to secure the scene.
Julianne Ashcroft, who had been cowering beneath a corner table throughout the entire shootout, crawled out onto the floor. Her dress was stained with spilled wine, her hair falling across her face. She looked toward Marcus lying unconscious on the floor, then up at Nikolai holding Belle.
She realized then that her entire war had failed.
Marcus was done. Her father was disgraced. And Nikolai would never, ever forgive what she had set in motion.
Two federal agents walked past her, slapped handcuffs on Marcus Vance, and began hauling him toward the exit. As they passed Julianne, one of them paused, checked a tablet, and looked down at her.
“Julianne Ashcroft?” the agent asked.
She froze. “Yes?”

“You’re under arrest for conspiracy, corporate wire fraud, and aiding a known criminal syndicate.”
Julianne opened her mouth to scream, but the cold click of steel cuffs silencing her wrists was the only answer she received.
