Chapter 6 - The Light That StayedThe autumn chill had settled over the Calloway estate—or as the staff now called it, simply home.

The grand foyer was flooded with golden morning sunlight pouring through the newly washed stained-glass windows.

On the main landing, Nia Bennett stood upright, her medical boot finally gone, wearing a soft cream dress as she reviewed a ledger with Thomas Hale.

The heavy front oak doors swung open.

Adrian walked in, hanging his coat on the mahogany stand, followed closely by a young man wearing a clean, pressed button-down shirt and carrying a stack of textbooks under his arm.

Lucas stopped at the foot of the stairs, looking up at Nia.

For a moment, neither of them spoke. The tension of the past months hung in the air—the oil spill, the sprained ankle, the bitter words traded in hallways.

Then Lucas offered a small, hesitant, entirely genuine smile.

"Morning, Nia," he said quietly.

Nia looked at him, noting the clear eyes, the straightened posture, and the absence of the arrogant sneer that used to define him. She smiled back.

"Morning, Lucas. Don't forget, your 8:30 macroeconomics lecture starts in forty minutes, and your father expects you back for dinner at six."

"Yes, ma'am," Lucas laughed softly, heading toward the side exit to catch his campus bus—no sports car, no chauffeur, just a young man earning his own way forward.

Adrian walked over to the foot of the stairs, stopping beside Nia. He watched his son leave, a quiet, settled peace in his dark eyes that had been missing for over a decade.

"He's studying," Adrian said softly, turning his gaze toward Nia. "Actually studying. He passed his midterms with a B-plus."

"Intelligence was never his problem, Mr. Mercer," Nia noted, closing her ledger. "Direction was."

Adrian stepped closer, the space between them warm and charged with a silent, growing understanding. He reached out, gently tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear.

"And what about your direction, Nia?" he asked, his voice low and intimate. "The accounting degree finishes in May. What happens then?"

Nia looked up into his eyes, a playful, confident spark dancing in hers.

"Well, Mr. Mercer," she murmured, a slow smile touching her lips. "I figured an empire this size is going to need a very qualified Chief Financial Officer. That is, if the master of the house thinks I'm qualified enough to stay."

Adrian’s gaze softened completely, all the cold power of his underworld reputation melting away in the presence of the woman who had finally brought warmth to his cold, dark home.

He took her hand, lacing his fingers through hers.

"Stay," Adrian whispered, kissing the back of her hand. "Forever."
