Chapter 3 - The Offer on the Table

The offer hung in the heavy, smoke-scented air of the private room like an unexploded shell. Claire stared at the glass of Barolo in her hand, the deep red liquid swirling gently as her hand trembled.

"Work for you?" Claire echoed, her voice laced with bitter disbelief. "Mr. Russo, in case you’ve forgotten, I work for tips and hourly wages. I don't launder money, I don't smuggle cargo through the docks, and I certainly don't translate death threats for a living."

"Who said anything about money laundering?" Gabriel asked smoothly, taking a slow sip of his own wine. "My organization generates millions of dollars in legitimate real estate, import-export logistics, and municipal contracts. But do you know what my biggest vulnerability is, Claire? It’s not rival syndicates with guns. It’s information."

He pushed himself off the table and walked toward her, his movements fluid and purposeful.

"Every week, foreign investors, eastern European cartels, and crooked politicians sit across from me at tables just like this one," Gabriel continued, his voice dropping into a low, persuasive register. "They smile, they shake my hand, and then they lean over and speak in Polish, Russian, or Mandarin, assuming the man across the table is just a brute from the South Side who only understands the language of violence. They plot against me in plain sight because they think people like you are invisible."

Claire held her ground, refusing to step back even as Gabriel closed the distance between them. "And you want me to be your human wiretap."

"I want you to be my intelligence director," Gabriel corrected. "A master's degree in applied linguistics, fluent in seven languages, with the observational skills of someone who has spent three years watching wealthy sociopaths tip two dollars on a two-hundred-dollar bottle of wine. You'd be stepping out of the shadows and into a position of absolute power."

"And if I say no?" Claire asked, testing the boundaries of the cage she had just stepped into. "If I tell you to take your job offer, your wine, and your criminal empire, and leave me to my minimum-wage shift?"

Gabriel’s expression didn't change, but a dangerous spark flickered in his amber eyes. "You can walk out that door right now, Claire. My men won't stop you. But consider this: Grigori’s associates know you were in this room tonight. Even if we lock Grigori away, his network has long tentacles. Within twenty-four hours, they’ll figure out who translated their little execution plot. By tomorrow night, your apartment in the Loop won't be safe. By next week, your landlord won't even have to remind you about the rent because you won't be around to pay it."

The blood rushed out of Claire's face. He wasn't threatening her; he was stating a cold, logistical reality. By exposing Grigori, she had crossed a line she could never uncross. The underworld didn't leave witnesses behind to ponder their linguistic achievements.

"You're a monster," Claire whispered, the words tasting like ash. "You create a war zone and then offer me a helmet."

"I'm a realist," Gabriel corrected gently, stepping back to give her space. "And right now, I'm the only thing standing between you and a shallow grave in the Pine Barrens. Think about it overnight. Here is my direct card."

He reached into his breast pocket and placed a heavy, matte-black card embossed with a single gold letter onto the silver tray. No phone number. No corporate title. Just the initial R.

Before Claire could answer, a sharp knock echoed on the heavy oak door.

"Boss," Viktor’s muffled voice came through the wood. "The perimeter is secure. Grigori’s backup crew is locked in the lower freezer with enough ice to keep them quiet until morning. The police scanner is clean. We need to move."

Gabriel looked at Claire one final time. "My town car is waiting in the front alley. It will take you home, and my men will ensure your building is secure until dawn. Consider your options, Claire Bennett. The world you thought you were hiding in doesn't exist anymore."
