Chapter 4 - The Confrontation at the CommissionThe Grand Ballroom of the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Providence was a monument to old-world luxury—gilded mirrors, massive crystal chandeliers, and heavy velvet drapes. But on this afternoon, it was a battleground.

At the center of a long mahogany table sat Victor Moretti.
At sixty-five, Victor was a ruthless dinosaur of the mob world. He had graying hair, cold blue eyes, and a face carved from malice. Flanking him were twenty heavily armed enforcers, their jackets bulging with concealed weapons. Sitting around the table were the heads of the four other major families operating in New England.
The heavy double doors of the ballroom slammed open.
Adriano Falcone walked in alone.
He wore no body armor. He carried no visible weapon. He walked down the long carpeted aisle with a calm, terrifying confidence that made the surrounding enforcers tense, their hands reaching instinctively for their sidearms.
"Adriano," Victor Moretti sneered, leaning back in his leather chair. "You come alone to answer for what you did to my daughter last night? You locked my blood in a room like an animal over a worthless maid!"
The other syndicate bosses remained silent, watching the two titans with sharp, calculating eyes.
Adriano stopped ten feet from the table. He rested his hands casually in his trouser pockets.
"Your daughter is currently in federal custody, Victor," Adriano said smoothly.
A collective shock ran through the room. Victor slammed his fists on the table, standing up so fast his chair fell backward with a heavy thud.
"What did you say?!" Victor roared. "You gave a Moretti to the feds?!"
"I gave two Morettis to the feds," Adriano corrected, pulling a thick leather folder from his inner jacket pocket and tossing it onto the center of the mahogany table. "In that folder are the original bank records, hit orders, and wiretaps proving that you ordered the ambush on Route 40 three years ago in West Virginia."
Victor’s face turned an ugly, mottled purple. "You're crazy! That was three years ago! You have no proof!"
"I have the survivor," Adriano said quietly. "And I have the widow of the man you murdered that night to keep your secret."
Adriano turned to face the other syndicate leaders at the table.
"For three years, Victor Moretti has been stealing from all of your territories to pay off federal judges and keep his West Virginia hit secret," Adriano announced, his voice echoing through the vast ballroom. "He compromised the entire Commission to cover up a botched hit on me. He lied to you. He used you."
The other bosses looked at the folder, then at Victor. Whispers broke out among them. The balance of power was shifting rapidly.
"He's lying!" Victor screamed, pointing a trembling finger at Adriano. "Kill him! Kill him now!"
Victor’s men drew their guns, but before they could raise their sights, the high stained-glass windows of the ballroom shattered simultaneously.
Red laser dots rained down from the upper balconies, centering precisely on the chests and foreheads of every single one of Victor’s enforcers. Heavy tactical boots thundered down the hallways outside, and the double doors burst open completely as dozens of heavily armed FBI HRT operators poured into the room, shields raised, automatic rifles trained on the crowd.
"FBI! Nobody move! Drop your weapons! Drop them now!"
The ballroom erupted into chaos, but it was a quick, decisive surrender. Victor’s men, seeing themselves entirely outgunned and surrounded by federal agents, dropped their pistols onto the carpet one by one.
Special Agent Vance, a stern man in a dark trench coat, stepped into the room, flanked by six agents. He walked straight to Victor Moretti, who was standing frozen in shock.
"Victor Moretti," Vance said, pulling a set of steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, racketeering, and interstate extortion. You have the right to remain silent."
As the steel cuffs clicked around Victor’s wrists, the old mob boss stared at Adriano with pure, unadulterated hatred.
"You ruined everything for a dead electrician's family!" Victor spat, his voice raspy with fury. "You destroyed our empire for a maid!"
Adriano walked up to Victor, leaning down until he was inches from the old man's ear.
"Thomas Hail was ten times the man you will ever be," Adriano whispered coldly. "And his family is going to inherit everything you tried to steal."

As the federal agents dragged Victor Moretti and his captains away in chains, Adriano stood alone in the center of the grand, empty ballroom. The shadows of his past were finally lifting. The empire built on blood and intimidation was crumbling, but for the first time in his life, Adriano felt completely light.
He turned and walked out of the hotel, heading back to the place where a little girl in yellow pajamas was waiting for him.
