Chapter 4 - Lockdown in the ICUThe temperature in the ICU room seemed to drop ten degrees in a single second.

Grant didn't shout. He didn't smash anything. He simply pulled his black leather gloves from his coat pocket, slipping them onto his hands with terrifying, deliberate precision.

"Cole," Grant said, his voice as smooth as crushed ice. "How many men do we have in the building?"

"Eight," Cole answered rapidly. "Four at the main entrance, two in the lobby, two outside this door. But Vance brought at least twenty guys. They're heavily armed, Grant. They've paid off two night-shift security guards to cut the floor's CCTV feeds."

Mara stepped forward, her heart hammering against her ribs. "He can't do that! This is an ICU! There are twelve other critical patients on this floor! If they cut power or start shooting—"

"Mara," Grant turned to her, his voice low and commanding. "Take Audrey. There’s a secure service corridor behind the nurse's station that leads to the pharmaceutical vault. It has reinforced steel doors and a independent power feed. Lock yourselves inside."

"What about you?" Mara demanded.

Grant pulled a second magazine from his belt, slapping it into his sidearm with a metallic CLACK. "I'm going to make sure Victor Vance never leaves this parking garage alive."

"Grant, wait!" Mara grabbed his arm. "Listen to me! Vance wants you to go down there! It's a trap! He knows you'll do anything to protect Audrey, so he's drawing you into an enclosed space where his men have the numerical advantage!"

Grant looked down at her hand on his sleeve. "I don't have a choice, Mara. I won't let him step foot on this floor."

"You do have a choice," Mara said fiercely, her mind working at hyper-speed, combining her intimate knowledge of hospital infrastructure with the desperate need to survive. "Look at where we are! This is a modern medical facility! We have biohazard controls, oxygen isolation valves, and automated door overrides!"

Grant frowned. "What are you talking about?"

"The main hallway outside the ICU is a negative-pressure containment zone," Mara explained rapidly, pointing to the red panel near the nurse's station. "It’s designed to isolate airborne pathogens during a bio-outbreak. If I hit the emergency decontamination seal from the master console, it drops three-inch steel fire doors across both ends of the hallway, locks the elevators, and floods the corridor with concentrated nitrogen gas to purge the air!"

Cole stared at her. "Nitrogen gas? What does that do?"

"It displaces oxygen," Mara said grimly. "Anyone trapped in that hallway without a breathing apparatus will lose consciousness in less than sixty seconds. No gunfire, no explosions, no casualties on the rest of the floor."

Grant stared at Mara, a slow, dangerous smile spreading across his face. "You really are something else, Mara Ellis."

"I told you," Mara said, setting her jaw. "I know this house."

"How long do we have before Vance’s men reach the floor?" Grant asked Cole.

Cole checked his tactical watch. "Elevator 3 just left the basement. They'll be on the fifth floor in ninety seconds."

"Right," Grant said. He looked at his six men standing in the hallway. "Cole, gather the team. Fall back into the central ICU hub. Everyone put on oxygen masks from the wall units. Mara... prep the seal."

Mara sprinted to the central nurse's station. The desk was empty—the night staff had retreated to the breakroom after hearing the security warnings. She accessed the emergency environmental control panel, flipping open the clear plastic cover over the red DECON PURGE switch.

On the wall monitor, she watched the elevator indicator light climb: Floor 2... Floor 3... Floor 4... Floor 5.

DING.

The heavy elevator doors at the end of the long hallway slid open.

Ten men stepped out, wearing heavy jackets, carrying suppressed rifles and iron pipes. At the head of the group was Victor Vance—a brutal, thick-necked man fifty years old, with a jagged scar running from his ear to his chin.

"Mercer!" Vance’s gravelly voice echoed down the quiet hallway. "I know you're here, Grant! Come out and sign the transfer deeds, or I start turning off life support machines one by one!"

Inside the ICU hub, Grant stood behind the glass doors, wearing a clear plastic oxygen mask, holding his gun at ready. He looked through the glass at Vance, then glanced at Mara.

Mara waited until all ten men were fully inside the forty-foot hallway, clear of the elevator doors.

"Goodnight, Mr. Vance," Mara whispered.

She slammed her hand down on the red DECON PURGE button.

ALARM SIREN WAILED.

A deafening electronic horn blasted through the hallway. Flashing red strobe lights lit up the ceiling.

CLANG! CLANG!

Heavy, two-ton reinforced steel fire doors slammed down from the ceiling at both ends of the hallway, sealing Vance and his ten men inside a tight, airtight glass-and-steel box.

"What the hell?!" Vance screamed, rushing to the steel door and hammering on it with his fist. "Open this door!"

Above their heads, heavy industrial vents hissed as pressurized nitrogen gas roared into the hallway.

Vance’s men began to gasp, clutching their throats as the oxygen level in the air dropped from twenty-one percent to zero in three seconds. They stumbled, dropping their weapons, coughing wildly as their vision went black. One by one, Vance’s entire strike force collapsed onto the linoleum floor like dominoes, rolling onto their sides, unconscious.

Vance slid down the glass wall, his eyes wide with utter shock, staring at Grant Mercer standing on the other side of the glass.

Grant walked up to the glass, looking down at his collapsing rival with cold, absolute victory.

Within forty-five seconds, all ten men lay completely unconscious on the floor, motionless.

Mara accessed the console, shutting off the nitrogen flow and activating the high-speed exhaust fans to purge the room with fresh air.

Grant removed his oxygen mask, turning to Mara.

"Call the police chief," Grant ordered Cole smoothly. "Tell him we’ve apprehended Victor Vance and ten of his top enforcers trying to vandalize a public hospital. Tell him to bring three transport vans."

Cole grinned, pulling out his phone. "With pleasure, boss."

Grant walked over to Mara, who was leaning against the nurse's station, trembling from the sudden release of intense pressure. He reached out, taking her hands in his, his gray eyes shining with an emotion she had never seen in him before.

"You just saved my sister," Grant said softly. "And then you took down my greatest enemy without firing a single bullet."

Mara gave a weak, exhausted laugh. "I told you. ER nurses don't mess around."
