Chapter 3 - The Gathering of the Guard

The house felt larger, colder, and infinitely more dangerous after Vanessa left. Every shadow in the hallway seemed to hold her quiet, mocking laugh; every corner of the ceiling looked like it housed one of the hidden cameras she had mentioned.

I didn't sleep that night.

Instead, I sat in the dark of my study, the only light coming from the glowing screen of my laptop. I was searching—not for legal precedents or divorce attorneys, but for something much more fundamental. I needed to know who Vanessa Reed really was.

By 3:00 AM, my personal phone rang.

The caller ID displayed the name Marcus Thorne. Marcus was a former military investigator who now ran a high-end private intelligence firm in Atlanta. He was also the man who had pulled me out of a collapsed building during a business trip to South America five years ago. He was the only person in the world I trusted with my life—and now, with my daughter’s.

"Adrian," Marcus’s deep, gravelly voice came through the speaker. "I’ve been running the background check you requested on Vanessa Reed. Or should I say, Vanessa Sterling."

My hand tightened on the phone. "Sterling?"

"She’s used four different surnames in the last ten years, Adrian," Marcus said, the rustle of papers audible over the line. "Always in different states. She targets wealthy widowers with young children. Men who are too buried in grief and corporate work to notice the subtle signs of manipulation. She marries them, isolates them from their families, and then initiates a highly aggressive divorce proceeding using fabricated evidence of neglect or abuse to secure massive settlements."

"My god," I whispered, a cold sweat breaking out on my forehead. "And the children?"

"She uses them as bargaining chips," Marcus said, his voice turning grim. "In her last marriage in Chicago, she managed to secure sole custody of a seven-year-old boy. She used the child to squeeze another two million out of the father over three years before 'consenting' to return custody. The boy was so emotionally damaged he had to be institutionalized for a year after he got back to his dad."

A wave of nausea washed over me. The image of Daisy—my sweet, fragile Daisy—being used as a hostage in some sterile courtroom, subjected to Vanessa’s quiet, cruel torments while I was forced to watch from a distance, made my blood boil.

"How do we stop her, Marcus?" I asked, my voice shaking with a mixture of rage and terror. "She has cameras in my house. She claims she has edited footage that makes me look like an unfit father."

"We don't play her game, Adrian," Marcus replied. "If you fight her in a standard divorce court, she’ll use her lawyers to drag this out for years, destroying your reputation and your company in the process. We need to go on the offensive. We need to find the raw, unedited footage from those cameras. And we need to find her previous victims."

"I can get the cameras," I said, looking up at the smoke detector in the corner of my study. "I’ll have my IT department sweep the house tomorrow morning while she’s gone."

"No," Marcus warned. "If she realizes you’re sweeping the house, she’ll lock the servers remotely and delete the evidence. I’m sending a team of my own men to Nashville tonight. We’ll intercept her network traffic and clone her cloud backups before she knows we’re even looking. In the meantime, you need to keep her calm. Play the part of the defeated husband. Let her think she has you cornered."

"I don't know if I can look at her without killing her, Marcus," I admitted, my eyes burning with exhaustion.

"You have to, Adrian," Marcus said softly. "For Daisy. The wolves are at the gate, but we’re going to dig a pit for them. Just hold the line."

I hung up the phone, walking down the hall to Daisy’s room. She was still sleeping, her small hand clutching a worn, blue teddy bear that had belonged to Megan. I knelt beside her bed, gently pressing my forehead against her small, warm hand.

"I will protect you, Daisy," I whispered into the dark. "Even if I have to burn my own empire to the ground to do it."
