Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Past

As winter approached, the bond between Arthur, Katherine, and young Theo grew stronger with each passing day. The cold, brooding estate had transformed into a haven of warmth. Arthur spent his evenings sitting by the nursery fire, laughing with Theo and reading poetry with Katherine.

However, the shadows of the past were not so easily dispelled.

Lord Francis Abernathy, bitter over his public humiliation and desperate to pay off monumental gambling debts, allied himself with a corrupt ring of financial speculators.

Through his network of informants, Abernathy discovered a dangerous secret: the catastrophic collapse of the Argentine Railway company six years prior—the very event that ruined Katherine’s father—had not been an accident. It had been an intentional, fraudulent stock manipulation engineered by Abernathy and his cabal to line their own pockets while bankrupting honest investors.

Abernathy realized that if Katherine, now backed by the formidable Duke of Westmoreland, ever looked into her father's old ledgers, the truth would come to light and destroy him.

He decided to strike first.

On a freezing November night, while Arthur was attending a critical late-night vote in the House of Lords, a fire suddenly broke out in the east wing of Wardington Manor.

Thick, black smoke billowed through the service corridors. The alarm bells rang out frantically through the night air.

In her suite, Katherine woke coughing, the acrid smell of burning timber filling her lungs. Her first thought was not of her own safety, but of the child.

"Theo!" she cried out, throwing on her robe and rushing into the hallway.

The nursery corridor was choked with smoke. Through the haze, Katherine saw a figure creeping out of Theo’s bedroom, holding a lantern and a oil flask! It was one of Abernathy’s paid thugs, hired to start the fire and kidnap the young heir in the chaos to hold him for ransom!

"Leave him!" Katherine screamed, charging forward without a second thought.

She tackled the thug from behind, knocking the oil flask from his hands. The man cursed, turning and grabbing Katherine by her hair, slamming her violently against the stone wall. Pain exploded behind her eyes, but she refused to give up. She reached out, grabbing a heavy brass candlestick from a nearby table, and struck the man across the jaw with all her remaining strength.

The thug collapsed, groaning on the floor.

Katherine stumbled into the nursery, pulling a crying Theo from his bed, wrapping him in a heavy woolen blanket.

"Hold onto me, Theo! Don't let go!" she coughed, shielding the boy with her body as she ran through the flames and smoke, bursting out onto the cold stone terrace just as the fire brigade arrived.

At that exact moment, a black carriage pulled up to the driveway at a breakneck speed.

Arthur leaped from the carriage before it even came to a complete stop. He had received an urgent telegram at Parliament warning of the fire.

When he saw the flames licking the east wing roof, his face turned deathly pale. "Katherine! Theo!" he roared, shoving past firefighters and servants.

Then, through the lingering smoke on the terrace, he saw them.

Katherine was sitting on the cold stone steps, holding Theo tightly in her arms, both of them covered in soot, trembling from the cold.

Arthur sprinted up the steps, dropping to his knees and wrapping his massive arms around both of them, pulling them violently against his chest. He buried his face in Katherine's soot-stained hair, his entire body trembling with an agony of relief.

"Thank God... thank God," Arthur sobbed openly, unashamed of the tears streaming down his face in front of his entire staff. "I thought I lost you... I thought I lost both of you."

Katherine pressed her face against his neck, feeling the thunderous beat of his heart. "We are safe, Arthur. He tried to take Theo... but we are safe."

Arthur pulled back, his gray eyes flashing with an absolute, terrifying dark light as he saw the bruise forming on Katherine's temple.

"Who did this?" Arthur growled, his voice vibrating with lethal intent.

"It was Abernathy’s men," Katherine whispered, pulling a charred leather ledger from her coat pocket—a book the thug had dropped in the fight. "He tried to destroy this... it’s my father's old correspondence. Abernathy didn't just ruin my father, Arthur. He tried to destroy your family tonight."

Arthur took the ledger, his jaw setting like iron.

"He has made his final mistake," Arthur said softly. "Tomorrow, I bring down the full weight of the Crown upon him."
