Chapter 3 - The Ring and the Raid

By Friday evening, the private chapel on the Castelli estate looked less like a house of worship and more like a heavily fortified armory disguised in white tulle and thousands of imported red roses.
Harper stood before a gilded three-way mirror in a bridal suite that smelled intensely of white lilies and expensive champagne. The gown—flown in via private jet from Milan within twelve hours—was an ivory silk-crepe masterpiece with long lace sleeves and a dramatic cathedral train. It hugged her waist and flared out with effortless elegance.
She looked like a queen. She felt like a prisoner of war.
The heavy oak door swung open, and Dominic stepped inside. He wore a bespoke charcoal tuxedo with a black silk tie, his broad chest filling the jacket with terrifying authority. The black serpent tattoo was hidden beneath his cuff, but the raw, dangerous energy radiating from him was palpable.
He stopped dead in his tracks. The cold, calculated mafia boss expression melted away for a fraction of a second, replaced by something raw and genuinely stunned.
"Well?" Harper asked defensively, crossing her arms over her corseted bodice. "Does it meet the syndicate’s quality control standards?"
Dominic walked slowly toward her, his footsteps silent on the thick Persian rug. He stopped just inches away, his amber gaze sweeping over her from head to toe.
"You look..." He paused, searching for a word that didn't sound too soft. "Dangerous."
"I feel ridiculous," Harper muttered, though a traitorous flush warmed her cheeks. "My pastry chef is probably wondering why I haven't shown up to frost the wedding cake for the Johnson-Smith reception tomorrow, and I'm standing here getting married to Chicago's most feared loan shark because your enemies thought I made a good prop."
"You're not a prop, Harper," Dominic said, his voice dropping into a low, intense hum. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a velvet box. Inside rested a vintage platinum ring encrusted with a heavy, flawless three-carat diamond surrounded by tapered baguettes. "This belonged to my grandmother. It’s survived three federal raids and two turf wars. It's indestructible. Just like this arrangement is going to be."
Harper swallowed hard as he slid the heavy ring onto her finger. It fit with absolute, terrifying perfection.
"And if the feds raid the wedding?" Harper asked nervously.
"Father Santini has a very fast blessing, and the back exit leads directly to an armored subterranean tunnel," Dominic replied without a trace of humor. "Relax, cara. The ceremony is just a formality to make the Merriweathers understand that you are untouchable. Once the ink dries on the marriage certificate, their leverage evaporates."
Before Harper could reply, a frantic pounding echoed at the door.
Mateo burst into the room, his suit jacket unbuttoned, an encrypted tactical radio buzzing loudly in his hand.
"Boss! We have movement!" Mateo shouted, panting slightly. "A team of six armed operatives just breached the outer perimeter near the East Gate. They're bypassing the security grid using military-grade frequency scramblers."

Dominic’s face transformed into an expression of absolute, chilling ice. All traces of the groom vanished, replaced by the apex predator who ruled the city's dark underbelly.
"Merriweather’s cleanup crew," Dominic said softly. He looked down at Harper, his hand instinctively sliding under his jacket toward the concealed shoulder holster holding his custom Sig Sauer P226. "They didn't wait for the wedding. They decided to crash it early."
