Chapter 5 - The Midnight Raid

"She's right," Julian panicked, jumping out of his chair, pacing back and forth across the kitchen floor like a caged animal. "She really has cousin Richard in the prosecutor's office! And when I was seventeen, after Sarah ran away, I had a complete mental breakdown. Victoria had me admitted to a private psychiatric facility for three months! She has the medical records! She can paint me as an unfit, violent father!"

"Julian, look at me!" I shouted, grabbing his face with both hands and forcing him to look directly into my eyes. "Stop running. Stop being the ten-year-old boy in the shed. You are a grown man. You are a father. And we are going to finish this tonight."

"How?!" he wept. "She has everything! She has money, power, connections—"

"She has an ego," I corrected coldly. "And ego makes people careless."

I grabbed my phone, opened my contacts, and dialed a number I hadn't called in four years: my uncle, Marcus Vance, a retired senior investigator for the Ohio State Highway Patrol who currently ran a private digital forensics firm in Cincinnati.

"Marcus?" I said when he answered on the third ring. "I need you to bring your mobile forensic unit to Columbus right now. I have evidence of an ongoing child abuse cover-up, a thirty-year-old homicide, and extortion involving a county official."

There was a brief pause on the line, followed by the sound of boots hitting the floor and a leather holster being picked up.

"Give me forty-five minutes, Chloe," Marcus replied softly. "And lock your doors."

While Marcus was on the highway, Julian and I executed the first phase of our plan.

We didn't wait for midnight. We didn't stay in our house to play defense.

Julian called his sister Sarah.

It took twenty minutes to find her phone number through an old college friend in Oregon. When Sarah answered the phone, her voice was guarded, weary, and cautious.

"Sarah?" Julian sobbed into the receiver. "It's Julian. I... I opened the envelope tonight."

Silence stretched across the line for five long seconds. Then, the sound of a woman weeping softly four thousand miles away.

"Is she hurting someone else, Jules?" Sarah asked, her voice trembling. "Did she find another child?"

"She hurt Elena," Julian said, his voice instantly firming up, anchored by a sudden, surging wave of protective fury. "She used the black bags on Elena, Sarah. But it stops tonight. I need you to tell me where the key to the shed floorboards is."

"It's not a key, Julian," Sarah said, her tone shifting from grief to razor-sharp intensity. "It's a copper pipe fitting on the back of the space heater inside the shed. Twist it clockwise. The floorboards are hinged. Everything Dad recorded before he died is in a metal ammo box under the foundation."

By 11:15 PM, Marcus Vance pulled his dark blue unmarked SUV into our driveway, accompanied by two active-duty State Highway Patrol cruisers with their emergency lights off.

Marcus stepped out, a tall, gray-haired man with eyes like flint. He looked at the photos of Elena's back, read Sarah's journal entries, and looked at the extortion text on my phone.

"This isn't just domestic abuse," Marcus said, his voice like grinding stones. "This is systematic criminal extortion and suspected aggravated murder. The local prosecutor’s office won't be able to touch this once state troopers execute a search warrant based on active extortion across state lines."

"She asked for the envelope by midnight," I said, looking Marcus dead in the eye. "Let's deliver it to her in person."
