Chapter 3 - The Web of Deceit

For the next forty-eight hours, the Rayhan estate became a war room.

Darian did not go into the corporate headquarters. He transferred his executive operations to his home study, refusing to leave Layla’s side while the battle lines were being drawn.

While the public news outlets remained unaware, the internal corporate grapevine was ablaze with rumors. Julian Vance had spent Wednesday and Thursday quietly visiting major shareholders, painting a grim picture of Darian’s mental health. He circulated leaked, heavily edited summaries of Camille’s legal complaint, claiming that Darian had suffered a severe nervous breakdown caused by delayed grief over Sophia, resulting in violent outbursts at home.

On Thursday afternoon, Marcus Bennett arrived at the estate in person.

The security chief was a tall, broad-shouldered man with graying hair and an unreadable face—a former military intelligence officer who had worked for Darian for six years. He carried a thick leather binder under his arm as he walked into Darian’s study.

Darian was sitting at his desk, reviewing financial reports, while Layla sat on a small rug in the corner of the office, quietly playing with her wooden building blocks. She had refused to leave her father's sight for more than an hour at a time since Camille’s departure, as if sensing that the house was undergoing a profound transformation.

"Report, Marcus," Darian said, gesturing toward the chair across from his desk.

Marcus sat down, opening the binder. He looked at Layla briefly, then lowered his voice. "You were right to run the audit, Boss. Camille Laurent isn't just an ambitious socialite. She’s heavily in debt."

Darian raised an eyebrow. "Debt? She drives a luxury sports car and owns a boutique gallery in the city."

"The gallery has been bleeding money for eighteen months," Marcus revealed, turning a page filled with bank statements. "She owes over two million dollars to offshore private equity lenders. Her lavish lifestyle was entirely funded by credit lines secured against her expected marriage settlement with you."

Darian felt a cold wave of disgust wash over him. "She was using the marriage to bail herself out."

"It gets worse," Marcus continued, tapping a document on the right side of the folder. "Three weeks ago, before the incident in the living room, Camille met twice with Julian Vance at a private club downtown. We recovered encrypted message logs between her phone and Vance’s personal tablet."

Darian leaned forward, his hands clasping together. "What did they discuss?"

"Vance agreed to pay off her gallery debts using an offshore consulting shell company if she helped him trigger a leadership crisis at Rayhan Dynamics," Marcus said grimly. "The incident with Layla on Tuesday... she was looking for a fight, Darian. She needed a catalyst to claim you were unstable. If Layla hadn't walked into that living room, Camille would have manufactured another reason by the end of the week."

Darian’s breathing grew shallow. The rage that surged within him was so vast, so intense, that it threatened to break his controlled facade. They had used his daughter. They had targeted a motherless three-year-old child as a pawn in a corporate coup.

"Daddy?"

Layla’s small, sweet voice cut through the darkness gathering in the room.

Darian immediately forced his hands to relax. He turned his head and looked at his daughter, who was holding up two wooden blocks stacked on top of each other.

"Look, Daddy," she said, her cheeks dimpling. "I made a tower."

Darian stood up, walked over to her, and knelt down on the rug. He gently tapped the top of the wooden tower, causing it to tumble over, which sent Layla into a fit of bright, ringing giggles.

"It’s a very good tower, sweetheart," Darian said softly, kissing her cheek.

He stood up and looked back at Marcus, his face hardened into an impenetrable shield of iron.

"Is the board meeting still scheduled for nine o'clock tomorrow morning?" Darian asked.

"Yes," Marcus said. "Julian has called for a vote of no confidence to remove you as CEO and appoint himself as interim chairman pending an emergency medical evaluation."

"Good," Darian said, a dark, terrifying calm settling over him. "Let him think he has the votes. Gather the board members' personal legal representatives and tell them to be in the main executive board room by eight-thirty. I want every document, every bank transfer, and every encrypted text message printed and bound."

"And Camille?" Marcus asked.

"Camille thinks she’s coming to a victory celebration," Darian said, looking out the window at the garden where Sophia used to plant roses. "Tell her legal team that I am willing to discuss a settlement before the board meeting begins. Tell her to meet us in the main boardroom at eight-forty-five."

"She’ll bring her lawyers," Marcus warned.

"Let her bring whoever she wants," Darian said coldly. "Tomorrow, we end this."
