Chapter 4 - THE ALLIANCE OF WOLVESThe private conference room on the top floor of Carver Towers overlooked the glittering expanse of the Manhattan skyline at midnight. Around the mahogany table sat four men who controlled eighty percent of the city’s financial and industrial infrastructure—and at the head of the table sat Augustus Carver, flanked by Claire, who had refused to leave the room, and Dominic Rainer, standing like a sentinel behind her chair.

"The Rossi syndicate is moving their primary cash reserves through a shell shipping company called Meridian Logistics," Dominic said, tapping a touchscreen on the wall that displayed a complex web of offshore accounts, corporate registries, and warehouse locations across New Jersey and Brooklyn.

"We've tracked three of their primary narcotics shipments coming into the Port of Newark scheduled for Thursday night," one of Carver’s senior advisors added, adjusting his glasses. "If we hit their financial accounts simultaneously, we freeze them out of the legal banking system before they can liquidate."

"Freezing them isn't enough," Augustus said, his voice cold and flat. "They attacked my family on American soil. They used my daughter to humiliate a man under my sphere of influence. I want their infrastructure dismantled brick by brick, their leadership brought to their knees, and their assets transferred into a charitable foundation bearing Claire’s name."

The men around the table exchanged glances of grim satisfaction. None of them dared question the order.

Dominic looked down at Claire. She was watching the data streams with a sharp, analytical focus that caught him completely off guard. She wasn't just the barista from Whitmore Coffee or the runaway girl from Carver Hill; she possessed the razor-sharp mind of a syndicate heiress who had simply chosen to live in exile.

"You're enjoying this," Dominic murmured quietly, leaning down so only she could hear.

Claire didn't look up from the screen. "I spent seven years watching people like you and my father treat the world like a chessboard. If I'm going to be dragged back into the game, I'm not going to play as a pawn."

"You were never a pawn, Charlie," Dominic said, using her real name for the first time outside of memory.

Claire turned her head, her amber eyes locking onto his. "Don't call me that. Not yet. You haven't earned it."

Dominic nodded slowly, accepting the rebuke without a word. He knew he had a mountain to climb to earn her forgiveness—if forgiveness was even possible after what had happened at the Marlowe Club.

"The operation begins at 0200 hours on Thursday," Augustus announced, standing up to signal the end of the meeting. "Dominic, you will lead the strike team on the Brooklyn docks. Let's show the Rossi family what happens when you mistake a man's pride for his weakness."

The advisors cleared the room in silence, leaving only Augustus, Claire, and Dominic behind.

Augustus walked over to his daughter, his expression softening just a fraction. "You should rest, Charlie. The east wing suite has been prepared for you. It's safe. No one gets past the outer perimeter."

"I'm staying here," Claire said firmly. "I want to see how this ends."

Augustus looked at her, then glanced at Dominic. A knowing, subtle smile flickered across the old man’s lips before he turned and walked toward the private elevator at the back of the penthouse.

"Don't break her heart a second time, Dominic," Augustus said over his shoulder without looking back. "Because unlike the first time, I won't just let you walk away."

The elevator doors closed, leaving Dominic and Claire alone in the cavernous penthouse office.

The rain outside beat against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, washing the city lights in streaks of gold and neon.

"Your father thinks we're a team," Dominic said, breaking the silence.

"My father sees what he wants to see," Claire replied, walking over to the glass to look out over the city she had fled seven years ago. "He thinks everything can be fixed with money, power, and controlled violence."

"Can't it?" Dominic asked, stepping up beside her, standing close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his broad shoulders.

Claire turned her face toward him, the faint red mark on her cheek still barely visible beneath the city lights.

"Some things are broken too deeply for power to fix, Dominic," she whispered. "Some mistakes leave scars that never truly fade."

Dominic looked at her cheek, a wave of deep, burning regret washing over him once again. He reached out slowly, his fingers hovering inches from her face, asking for permission without words.

Claire didn't pull away.

His fingertips brushed lightly against her skin, careful, tender, entirely different from the hand that had struck her just days ago.

"I'll spend the rest of my life proving I can be the man who protects you instead of the man you need protection from," Dominic said, his voice dropping to a low, raw whisper.

Claire held his gaze, her heart hammering against her ribs, knowing that the storm was coming—and that whatever happened on Thursday night would decide whether they survived or burned together.
