Chapter 6 - The Alpha’s Claim

Damon laughed, stepping forward, but before he could complete his shift back into a wolf, the forest behind him rustled.

Gavin and two other massive male shifters from the Hale pack stepped out from the treeline, cutting off the intruders' escape route. The trap had been reversed. Damon’s scouts weren't hunting us; they had walked right into a perimeter sweep.

Damon’s arrogant smile faltered as he looked around at the circle of apex predators surrounding him. But his eyes flicked back to me with a desperate, calculating malice.

“You can’t protect a human hybrid, Hale!” Damon shouted, lunging forward with blinding speed toward where I stood.

He didn't know.

He looked at my pale face, my oversized hoodie, and my human posture, and he saw an easy target. He saw a weakness to exploit.

He didn't see the fire raging beneath my skin.

As Damon launched himself into the air, claws extended toward my throat, I didn't run. I didn't scream.

I let go.

The shift happened faster than a heartbeat. The world exploded into sound and fury as my human form melted away, replaced by six hundred pounds of pure, protective rage. I didn't just catch Damon mid-air; I hit him like a falling boulder, slamming his massive wolf form into the rocky earth with a sickening thud that knocked the wind out of him.

Damon let out a yelp of pure shock as my paws pinned his shoulders to the dirt, my jaws snapping inches from his throat. The raw, primal dominance of an expectant mother bear defending her cub was a force of nature that no rival alpha could overcome.

Rowan stood a few feet away, chest heaving in his bear form, watching in stunned, fierce admiration as I kept the intruder pinned beneath my weight.

I leaned down, pressing my massive snout against Damon’s bleeding ear, letting out a roar that echoed across the entire valley—a declaration of territory, blood, and survival that left no doubt about who owned this mountain.

Damon whimpered, tucking his tail as best as a pinned wolf could, signaling absolute surrender.

Gavin stepped forward, giving a sharp, authoritative bark that told the remaining scouts to drag their alpha back across the northern border. Within seconds, the intruders scrambled backward into the trees and vanished down the ridge, broken and humiliated.

The forest fell quiet again, save for the wind rustling through the pines.

I shifted back, shivering slightly as I stood among the pine needles, my breathing heavy. Rowan shifted beside me, returning to his human form in a fluid motion, stepping immediately to my side to wrap his warm, heavy jacket around my shoulders.

He pulled me against his chest, burying his face in my hair, his arms trembling slightly with the lingering adrenaline of the fight.

“Are you alright?” he murmured against my skin.

“Never better,” I whispered, looking out over the valley that stretched endlessly beneath the golden Colorado sun.

My art career in the city felt like a lifetime ago. The canvas of my life had been splashed with wilder colors, deeper shadows, and a love that was fierce enough to move mountains. I reached down, resting my hand gently against my stomach, feeling the steady, powerful heartbeat of our cub.

We were home.
