Chapter 5 - The Unbroken Thread

As the elevator doors closed behind the retreating federal agents, the penthouse plunged back into a profound, suffocating silence.
Molly stood by the coffee table, her hands trembling slightly as she stared at the flash drive resting on the glass. The revelation about her father—the lingering shadow of his ruined reputation—still echoed painfully in her mind, but the immediate threat had been neutralized by the sheer, terrifying force of Vincent’s protection.
“You had that evidence all along,” Molly said quietly, not looking up.
“Vance has been circling my operations for two years,” Vincent admitted, walking over to stand beside her. “I keep files on everyone who thinks they can use the law as a weapon for extortion. Your father’s name was mentioned in one of Vance’s old prosecutor files from a decade ago. Vance was the one who suppressed the exonerating evidence to secure his own promotion.”
Molly turned her head, looking up into Vincent’s gray eyes. The hardness in his face was gone, replaced by a quiet, steady warmth that only she was permitted to see.
“Why did you protect me, Vincent?” she asked, her voice cracking with vulnerability. “Not just tonight. From the very beginning. You didn't even know who I was.”
Vincent reached out, his large, warm hand gently covering her bandaged wrist—careful not to press too hard, offering absolute support without a shred of ownership.
“From the moment you grabbed my fork in the middle of a room full of armed men and stared down a killer without blinking,” Vincent said softly, “I knew you were the only person in Chicago who wasn’t afraid of my shadow. And for the first time in my life, I didn't want someone who bowed to my power. I wanted someone who would stand shoulder-to-shoulder with me against it.”
Molly’s heart swelled. All her life, she had believed her size, her modest background, and her quiet struggles made her invisible—or worse, a liability. But looking at the most feared man in the Midwest, she realized she had never been weak. She had simply been waiting for a world worthy of her strength.
She placed her other hand over his, lacing her fingers through his.

“And if I don't want to live in a golden fortress forever?” she asked, a faint, teasing smile touching her lips.
Vincent’s mouth curved into a slow, genuine grin. “Then we sell the fortress, burn the syndicate records, and open a restaurant where no one ever has to worry about what’s in the sauce.”
