Chapter 4 - Unearthing the Shadow

The investigation shifted rapidly from a case of child neglect to a major cold-case criminal inquiry.

By afternoon, forensic specialists had arrived at Don Ernesto’s house with ground-penetrating radar and cadaver dogs. The quiet neighborhood was sealed off with yellow tape, attracting crowds of onlookers and local news reporters.

Lucía arrived at Carmen’s house three hours later, her face blotchy from crying, looking smaller and more fragile than Carmen had ever seen her.

She stood at the front door, hovering uncertainly on the threshold, afraid to step inside.

“Mom...” Lucía choked out, clutching her purse against her stomach. “Can I... can I see Vale?”

Carmen looked at her daughter. The anger that had consumed Carmen the day before was still there, but beneath it lay a profound, aching sorrow for the girl she had raised—a girl who had let herself be worn down by a toxic marriage until she became blind to the monsters around her.

“She’s sleeping,” Carmen said quietly, stepping aside to let Lucía enter. “Come in. Drink some tea.”

Lucía walked in silently, sitting at the kitchen table where Valentina had eaten earlier. She wrapped her trembling fingers around a hot cup of chamomile tea, staring into the liquid as if searching for answers.

“The police called me,” Lucía whispered, her voice barely audible. “They questioned Rodrigo for four hours today. Mom... he lied to me about everything. Everything.”

“Tell me,” Carmen said gently, sitting across from her.

“Pilar didn’t run away to be with a boy,” Lucía said, tears spilling over her dark lashes. “When Rodrigo was eighteen, his father told him that Pilar had died in an accident after falling from the roof while trying to escape her room. His father threatened to destroy the family if Rodrigo ever spoke her name again. Rodrigo was terrified of his father, so he stayed quiet. He helped his father pretend she ran away so the police wouldn’t investigate!”

Carmen gripped the edge of the table. “And what about the money? The bank slips?”

“Don Ernesto took Pilar’s savings and used them to pay off a local official to close the missing person report as a voluntary runaway,” Lucía said, her body trembling with violent sobs. “For fifteen years, Rodrigo lived with that secret! He grew up cold, cruel, and paranoid because his father raised him in a house built on a grave of lies!”

“And when his father started losing his mind,” Carmen continued, completing the horrifying picture, “Rodrigo tried to hide him away in that house so the truth would never come out. He used you, Lucía. He used your exhaustion, your need for help, and your trust to turn your daughter into a distraction for an old man’s rotting mind.”

Lucía covered her face and wept aloud—a raw, gut-wrenching sound of complete realization and soul-crushing regret.

“I was so stupid,” Lucía sobbed. “I thought I was being a good mother by working double shifts. I thought I was saving money for Vale’s future. But I was handing my baby to a family of monsters!”

Carmen stood up, walked around the table, and pulled Lucía’s head against her hip, holding her daughter tight just as she had held Valentina the day before.

“You were blind, Lucía,” Carmen said softly, tears running down her own cheeks. “Because you believed that a father and a husband would protect you. But now your eyes are open. You cannot undo what happened, but you can choose who you are from this moment forward.”

Suddenly, the front door opened, and Detective Morales stepped into the hallway, his expression somber and tired.

Lucía wiped her eyes quickly, standing up. “Detective? Did they find... did they find Pilar?”

Morales took off his hat, looking between the two women.

“We found structural anomalies beneath the concrete floor of the old tool shed in the backyard,” Morales stated quietly. “The forensic team has uncovered human remains along with a small silver shoe buckle. We are waiting for formal DNA confirmation, but there is little doubt. It is Pilar Morales.”

Lucía collapsed back into her chair, breathless.

“And Rodrigo?” Carmen asked sharply.

“Rodrigo Morales has been formally arrested as an accessory after the fact to a homicide and for obstruction of justice,” Morales replied. “Don Ernesto Morales remains under armed guard at the hospital. Given his severe cognitive state, he will likely be remanded to a high-security forensic psychiatric facility for the remainder of his life.”

Morales looked at Lucía with a gaze that was stern, yet not entirely devoid of sympathy. “Mrs. Flores, the court will require you to undergo mandatory parenting classes and psychological counseling before custody of your daughter can be restored to you. But for now, remaining here under your mother’s supervision is the best place for Valentina.”
