Chapter 6 - Blood, Violets, and a New Dawn“GET DOWN!” Leo roared, tackling me to the stone floor of the balcony just as a second round ricocheted off the wrought-iron railing with a metallic shriek.

Alarms instantly wailed across the estate. Red security floodlights snapped on, bathing the gardens in an eerie, crimson glow. Within three seconds, heavy armored doors slammed shut over every window in the mansion, and four armed guards in tactical gear rushed onto the balcony, returning suppressive fire toward the tree line beyond the perimeter fence.
Leo hauled me up, shielding my body with his own as he dragged me through the sliding glass doors back into the safety of the reinforced bedroom.
“Are you hit?” he demanded, his hands frantically scanning my body for injuries, his face pale with sudden, blinding panic.
“I’m fine! I’m fine!” I gasped, my heart hammering like a trapped bird.
Downstairs, the heavy bass rumble of shotgun fire echoed through the lower courtyard. Rocco’s private security detail was already neutralizing the perimeter threat.
Within ten minutes, the gunfire ceased. A tense, suffocating silence settled over the estate, broken only by the pulsing wail of the security alarms.
The bedroom door pushed open, and Rocco Valentino walked inside. His hands were bare, but the knuckles of his right hand were stained dark with fresh blood. His face was a mask of cold, unmitigated wrath.
“The sniper is dead,” Rocco said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “He was an independent contractor hired by a captain in the Chicago Outfit. His body is currently being loaded into the back of a truck to be delivered directly to the Outfit’s primary social club downtown.”
Leo stood tall, stepping between his father and me. “This war has gone on long enough, Dad. If the Outfit thinks they can bleed our front doorstep, we burn their entire organization to the ground before sunrise.”
Rocco looked at his son, then shifted his piercing gaze to me. He walked slowly across the room, stopping just feet away.
“You saved my son’s life in a greasy diner two months ago, Mia,” Rocco said softly, his voice carrying the weight of absolute authority. “Tonight, our enemies proved they will never stop trying to reach us through you. Which means there is only one logical way to end this war permanently.”
I blinked, confused. “What way?”
Rocco gestured toward the open balcony doors, where the crimson security lights were slowly turning back to a steady, peaceful white.
“Tonight, the Valentino family announces its formal merger with our remaining neutral allies in the syndicate, cementing absolute control over the city,” Rocco declared. “And tomorrow morning, public records will reflect a new addition to our lineage. You aren't just a guest under our protection anymore, Mia. You are marrying my son. Once your name is legally tied to the Valentino dynasty, touching you becomes an act of war so total and final that no rival family in America will ever dare draw breath near you again.”
I stared at Rocco, stunned into complete silence. I looked at Leo, whose expression softened into a hopeful, vulnerable smile that completely transformed the dangerous billionaire into a man deeply, hopelessly in love.
“Only if you want this, Mia,” Leo said quietly, stepping closer and taking my hands in his. “I know this isn't the life you asked for when you walked into that diner. But I promise you... I will spend every breath I have making sure you are the happiest, most protected woman on earth.”
I looked down at my hands—hands that had once scrubbed greasy diner tables for minimum wage. Now, they were held by the most powerful man in the underworld, backed by a dynasty that ruled the city from the shadows.
A slow, fierce smile touched my lips. I wasn't the helpless waitress anymore. I was the shield that saved a billionaire, and now, I was becoming the queen of his empire.
“Let’s do it,” I whispered.

Three months later, the wedding was the biggest event Chicago had never read about in the newspapers—a grand, lavish ceremony held on a private estate surrounded by white roses, armed security, and the most powerful outlaws in the country. Nobody dared to object. Nobody dared to blink.
And as Leo slipped a heavy diamond band onto my finger beneath the summer stars, I knew the gray sedan and the gunfire in the diner were a lifetime away. I had walked into Old Joe’s Burger Joint as a nobody, but I was stepping out into the light as a Valentino. And heaven help anyone who ever tried to cross us again.
