Chapter 3 - The Shadow of the SterlingsWithin forty-eight hours, the news of Julian Vance’s broken engagement to Victoria Sterling dominated the financial and society pages of Chicago.

Julian didn't waste a single second. He immediately dispatched his personal legal team to halt my eviction proceedings, paid off the entirety of my mother’s physical therapy arrears, and secured her a private suite in the city's top rehabilitation facility.

I moved into a quiet guest townhouse on Julian’s private estate in Lake Forest. For the first week, I felt like a ghost wandering through a palace. After years of double shifts, stale coffee, and counting pennies at the grocery store, the silence of safety was almost unsettling.

One afternoon, while walking through the estate’s glass greenhouse, I found Julian sitting at a large oak desk covered in blueprints and shipping manifests. He looked exhausted, rubbing his temples as his phone buzzed incessantly.

"The Sterling family isn't going down without a fight," Julian admitted as I set a cup of tea down beside his desk. "Victoria’s father, Richard Sterling, has filed an emergency injunction claiming I breached our corporate merger contract. He’s threatening to freeze Vance Logistics' operating accounts before our international shipping launch next week."

"Because of me?" I asked, a knot of guilt tightening in my throat.

Julian stood up, walking around the desk to stand directly in front of me. He reached out and gently took my hands, his touch warm and reassuring.

"Never say that, Clara," he said firmly. "Richard Sterling was stealing from my family long before you walked into that ballroom. Victoria used people her entire life because she was taught that money gave her the right to destroy others. You spent your nights sitting in hospital hallways giving comfort to strangers who had nothing to offer you in return."

Before I could answer, the heavy wooden doors of the study burst open.

Richard Sterling himself walked in, flanked by two corporate attorneys and Victoria, who looked paler and more vengeful than she had on the rooftop.

"Julian," Richard growled, tossing a legal summons onto the table. "You have twenty-four hours to reinstate the merger agreement and issue a public apology to my daughter. If you refuse, we publish the internal logs showing that your late mother's trust was transferred illegally—and we blame your new 'friend' here for corporate espionage."

Victoria smiled coldly from behind her father. "Did you really think a nursing assistant with a clean apron could defeat my family, Julian? We own the banks. We own the press."
