Chapter 3 - The Golden CageShadows at the GateWithin three weeks, Marcus Chen’s life had been completely rewritten, yet he felt like a actor playing a role in a play he hadn't auditioned for.

He slept in a bed with high-thread-count sheets. He ate hot, chef-prepared meals. He wore tailored wool sweaters and sturdy leather boots provided by Vincent. But he kept his grandmother’s old, patched coat hanging neatly in the front of his massive mahogany closet—a reminder of who he was and where he came from.

To Maya, Marcus became an anchor.

The trauma of the kidnapping attempt had left the seven-year-old prone to night terrors, but she refused to sleep unless Marcus sat in the armchair beside her bed, reading to her or quietly working on his self-taught drafting sketches. To the rest of the Torino household, Marcus was a enigma: a quiet, gentle young man who held immense sway over the boss simply by existing.

However, in the dark underbelly of the city, Vincent’s decision to elevate a homeless nobody was viewed with intense suspicion.

It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon. Marcus had just picked up Maya from her elite private school in a bulletproof sedan driven by Marco. As they pulled up to a red light three blocks from the estate, a heavy delivery van suddenly swerved out of a side street, T-boning the escort vehicle in front of them.

CRASH!

Metal screeched against metal. Glass shattered across the asphalt.

"Down! Get down!" Marco bellowed, unholstering his heavy automatic pistol in a flash.

Before the tires stopped spinning, four men in black tactical gear burst out from the back of the delivery van, weapons raised, charging directly toward Marcus and Maya’s sedan.

Maya let out a pierced shriek, curling into a ball on the leather floorboards.

Marcus didn't have a gun. He didn't have military training. But he had three years of street survival instincts and an overwhelming, instinctual urge to protect the child who had trusted him.

"Stay under the seat!" Marcus yelled to Maya.

He reached into the door compartment, pulled out the emergency steel tire iron Marco kept there, and threw his weight against the car door, shoving it open right into the face of the first approaching attacker.

CLANG!

The heavy steel door smashed into the gunman’s chest, sending him sprawling into the wet gravel. Marcus scrambled out, swinging the tire iron with frantic, raw desperation, catching a second attacker across his shoulder before the man could raise his rifle.

BANG! BANG!

Marco shot the third attacker from inside the car, while the fourth fled back into the alley as police sirens began to wail in the distance.

It was over in twenty seconds.

Marcus stood in the middle of the rain-slicked street, his chest heaving, his hands bruised and bloody from gripping the tire iron, his tailored sweater soaked through.

Marco stepped out of the vehicle, looking at the two downed attackers, then looking at Marcus with a fresh, profound sense of awe.

"You took down a Marcone mercenary with a tire iron, kid?" Marco muttered, shoving his gun back into his holster.

Marcus didn't answer. He threw the steel tool aside, dropped to his knees in the backseat, and pulled the shaking little girl into his arms.

"I'm here, Maya," Marcus whispered, his own heart pounding like a war drum against his ribs. "I'm here. Nobody's touching you."

When they returned to the estate an hour later, Vincent was already waiting in the courtyard, surrounded by twenty armed men.

When Vincent saw Maya walk out of the car unharmed, holding Marcus's hand—and when Marco explained how Marcus had put his own body between the guns and the girl—Vincent didn't say a word.

He simply walked up to Marcus, placed a heavy hand on his soaked shoulder, and squeezed it until it hurt.

"You proved yourself today, Marcus," Vincent said softly, his voice trembling slightly with suppressed emotion. "Now it's my turn to finish this."
