Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary within the WallsDays bled into a peaceful, surreal routine inside the mansion.

For the first time in her life, Maria didn't wake up terrified of a knock on the door. The staff, once distant and formal, now treated her and Alina with quiet warmth. The head chef prepared special organic meals for the baby, and the housekeeper from the east wing occasionally dropped off hand-knitted blankets for the little girl.

Yet, the center of gravity in the household had undeniably shifted.

Wherever Adrian was, Alina wanted to be. If he was working late in his study, the baby would sit on a soft rug near his desk, playing with wooden blocks while he reviewed corporate portfolios. If he walked through the halls, Alina would twist in Maria's arms, stretching her hands out until Adrian took her.

The cold, unapproachable billionaire had become, to everyone's utter disbelief, a doting father figure.

One afternoon, Maria was wiping down the mahogany table in the grand dining room when Adrian walked in, rolling up his shirtsleeves. Alina was sitting perched on his shoulder, happily pulling at a stray lock of his dark hair.

"You spoil her, Mr. Hale," Maria said softly, unable to hide the small smile playing on her lips.

Adrian set the baby down gently in her high chair, handing her a teething biscuit. He turned to Maria, his dark eyes observing her with a gentle intensity that made her breath catch.

"You've been calling me Mr. Hale for weeks," he noted quietly, leaning against the edge of the table. "My name is Adrian."

Maria looked down at her cleaning cloth, her cheeks warming. "It feels... improper. You own this house. You're saving our lives."

"I'm keeping my home safe," Adrian corrected gently. "And right now, that includes both of you. You don't have to look over your shoulder anymore, Maria. You can breathe."

Those words—you can breathe—hit Maria like a physical blow. For years, every breath had been measured, calculated, tainted by fear. Hearing someone offer her sanctuary without asking for anything in return felt like standing in the rain after a lifetime of drought.

"What if Viktor comes back?" she whispered, her voice cracking. "What if he finds a way past your security?"

Adrian reached out, his warm fingers gently closing over her trembling hand. The contact sent a sudden, electric shiver up her arm.

"Let him try," Adrian said, his voice dropping to a low, resolute purr. "I've already initiated legal and financial countermeasures. His accounts have been frozen, his syndicates are being audited by federal investigators, and warrants have been issued for his arrest across three states. By the time he realizes what hit him, he won't have an empire left to command."

Maria looked up into his eyes, seeing a depth of loyalty and power she had never imagined possible.

For the first time since she fled into the dark with a newborn in her arms, Maria felt a dangerous, beautiful spark of hope.
