Chapter 3 - The Unspoken AccordThe next morning, the sun rose over the Calloway estate in a blaze of winter gold, casting long blue shadows across the frozen lawns.

Claire was up before dawn, preparing breakfast in the main kitchen with the other domestic staff. The head housekeeper, Mrs. Gable—a stern woman who had run the estate kitchen for thirty years with an iron fist—kept casting sidelong glances at Claire.

"You had a visitor last night, Parker," Mrs. Gable muttered, whisking a bowl of heavy cream without looking up.

Claire’s hands froze over the counter where she was slicing bread. "Mr. Calloway stopped by the cottage for two minutes, Mrs. Gable. Just to speak about... safety protocols."

Mrs. Gable stopped whisking. She turned her sharp eyes toward Claire. "Mr. Calloway doesn't make house calls for safety protocols. If he wanted to talk about rules, he would have called a meeting in the west wing. The fact that he came to your door means he's paying attention to you. And in this house, when the boss pays attention, you tread very carefully."

Claire swallowed hard, feeling a knot twist in her stomach. "I didn't ask for his attention."

"Nobody ever asks for it," Mrs. Gable said grimly. "It just finds you."

Meanwhile, out in the eastern courtyard, a very different kind of attention was taking shape.

Vincent stood by the stone archway with a heavy leather leash in his hand. Ten feet away, Ranger was sitting upright on the gravel, completely ignoring the two armed guards standing near the security gate. The mastiff’s amber eyes were fixed entirely on the servants' cottage door.

At 8:15 AM, the door opened.

Claire stepped out first, wearing her navy blue uniform coat, holding Maddie’s small red hand. As soon as Ranger saw the little girl, the mastiff’s massive tail gave a single, heavy thump against the frozen ground—a sound like a baseball bat hitting a tree trunk.

Claire stopped dead in her tracks, pulling Maddie back. "Mr. Calloway... please."

Vincent lowered his gaze from the archway, walking slowly across the courtyard toward them. He had a thick canvas blanket folded over one arm and a porcelain bowl of warm broth in his hand.

"Mrs. Parker," Vincent greeted calmly. "Good morning."

"Mr. Calloway, we were just heading to the south wing," Claire said nervously, her body positioned between Maddie and the dog.

"I know," Vincent said. He stopped a few feet away, kneeling down beside Ranger. The giant dog didn't tense; he leaned his heavy shoulder against Vincent’s thigh, acknowledging his master, but his eyes drifted immediately back to Maddie.

Vincent looked from the dog to the little girl. "Maddie."

The little girl peeked out from behind her mother's skirt.

"Do you want to see his owie?" Vincent asked quietly.

Claire gasped. "Mr. Calloway, you can't—"

"Claire," Vincent interrupted, using her first name for the first time. The weight of it hung in the cold air, absolute and undeniable. "Look at him."

Claire fell silent. She looked down at Ranger.

The mastiff wasn't growling. His ears were relaxed, his breathing slow and even. He looked almost... vulnerable.

Maddie stepped out from behind her mother. She didn't run; she walked slowly, her red boots crunching softly on the frost-covered gravel. She stopped two feet from the dog, holding her stuffed bear against her chest.

"Is it still hurting?" Maddie asked softly.

Ranger let out a low, rumbling sigh that sounded remarkably like an agreement. He stretched his injured left leg out slightly onto the canvas blanket Vincent had laid on the ground.

Vincent looked up at Claire, his grey eyes softening just a fraction. "He hasn't let anyone clean that joint in a month. The inflammation is spreading. Dr. Brooks says if we don't apply the medicated ointment today, he won't be able to put weight on it by the weekend."

Claire looked from the billionaire to the mastiff, realizing with a sudden, sinking clarity what was happening.

Vincent Calloway wasn't asking for permission. He was offering a negotiation.

May you like

"You want her to do it," Claire said, her voice shaking with disbelief.

"I want him to heal," Vincent corrected smoothly. "And you are the only person on this estate he trusts enough to let near him right now."
