Chapter 2 - The House on 12th StreetThe house on 12th Street in East Nashville was a modest, peeling yellow bungalow with a sagging porch and a rusted tricycle on the front lawn. To anyone else, it looked like a standard working-class home. To Ethan Cole, billionaire tycoon and master of a real estate empire, it was the center of the universe.

The SUV rolled to a stop in the gravel driveway.
Ethan didn't wait for Rosa to turn off the ignition. He shoved the passenger door open, stepping out into the cold drizzle without his overcoat, his dark suit jacket dampening instantly against the autumn air.
“Mr. Cole, wait,” Rosa hurried out behind him, catching up as he strode up the wooden steps of the porch. “Please. She’s sleeping. She’s only eight months old. If you burst in there screaming—”
“I’m not going to scream, Rosa,” Ethan said, his jaw locked so tight his teeth ached. “I just want to see my child.”
Rosa fumbled with the brass key, her hands shaking so badly she dropped it twice before finally getting it into the lock. She pushed the door open, revealing a warm, dimly lit living room that smelled faintly of vanilla candles, laundry detergent, and baby powder.
It was clean, neat, and impossibly small compared to the cavernous limestone halls of the Cole estate.
“Sofia?” Rosa called out softly, stepping into the hallway. “Sofia, honey, Mama’s home.”
From a small bedroom at the end of the hall came a soft, questioning coo.
Ethan felt his legs turn to lead. Every step he took toward that doorway felt heavier than the last, as if he were walking through deep water. He reached the threshold and pushed the white wooden door open an inch further.
The room was painted a cheerful pale yellow. A small white crib sat against the far wall beneath a mobile of dangling felt stars.
Inside the crib, wrapped in a pink flannel blanket adorned with small white ducks, was a baby girl.
She had a tuft of fine, dark hair curling against her forehead. Her cheeks were round and flushed with sleep, and as she stirred, she blinked open a pair of large, luminous gray eyes that stopped Ethan’s heart entirely.
They were Claire’s eyes. Exact, mirror images of the woman he had loved and buried.
“Oh, god,” Ethan choked out, his hands gripping the doorframe so hard his knuckles turned white.
The baby let out a tiny yawn, stretching her chubby arms upward into the empty air.
Rosa slipped past him quietly, walking over to the crib. She reached down, her movements tender and practiced, and lifted the infant into her arms, supporting her head against her shoulder.
“She likes to wake up slowly,” Rosa murmured, her voice thick with emotion. She turned around, looking at Ethan with wide, pleading eyes. “Do you... do you want to hold her?”
Ethan could not breathe. He looked at the tiny human being in Rosa’s arms, terrified that if he reached out, he would shatter her, or wake up from a dream he didn't dare believe was real.
Slowly, mechanically, he extended his arms.
Rosa stepped forward and transferred the baby into his embrace.
The moment Sofia’s tiny form settled against his chest, a jolt of pure, blinding electricity surged through Ethan’s nervous system. The baby was warm, solid, and impossibly light. She smelled of baby lotion and sweet milk.
Sofia blinked up at him, tilting her head with innocent curiosity. She didn't cry. Instead, she reached up a tiny, perfect hand, her small fingers wrapping firmly around the lapel of Ethan’s damp suit jacket.
Ethan dropped to his knees right there on the nursery floor, burying his face in the crook of the baby’s neck as the dam finally, violently broke.
For eight months, he had not shed a single tear. He had been strong for the board of directors, strong for the press, strong for the hollow shell of a life he maintained. But now, kneeling on a cheap rug in a modest East Nashville bungalow, the billionaire wept with the raw, uncontained agony of a father who had been brought back from the dead.

“I’ve got you,” Ethan whispered, his voice cracking violently against her hair. “I’ve got you, baby girl. I’m never letting you go.”
Sofia cooed softly, patting his cheek with her tiny hand as if she understood every word.
