Chapter 6 - A Different Kind of EmpireThe winter storm broke by Friday morning, leaving Philadelphia blanketed in a pristine, blinding layer of white snow that caught the morning sun like crushed diamonds.

Outside Miller’s Pharmacy on Fifth Street, a familiar old man sat on the wooden bench. But today, he wasn't shivering. He wore a heavy wool overcoat, thick leather gloves, and a thermos of hot coffee sat beside him on the freshly shoveled concrete.
Across the street, idling quietly by the curb, was the black Cadillac Escalade.
Inside the vehicle, Dante Russo watched through the tinted window as a small pink-jacketed figure—brand new, bright, and warm—skipped down the sidewalk holding her mother’s hand.
Lily stopped in front of the old man, waving brightly. The old man smiled back, tipping his cap with genuine, heartfelt dignity.
Dante turned his gaze toward Nina. She looked relaxed, her shoulders unburdened by the crushing weight of exhaustion that had defined her every movement just a week ago. She caught his eye across the street.
She didn't look away. Instead, she offered him a small, quiet, knowing nod.
Marco shifted the Escalade into drive, his hands resting on the steering wheel. “Where to, boss? We have the board meeting at eleven.”
Dante looked back out the window at the morning sun reflecting off the snow-covered pavement. He thought of the steel lighter in his pocket, the trust fund secured for a little girl, and the warmth of a coat given away in the dark.

For the first time in his life, Dante Russo felt entirely invincible. Not because of his guns, his money, or his walls. But because he had finally found something worth protecting.
“Let the board wait, Marco,” Dante said, a genuine, unburdened smile touching the corners of his mouth. “We have all the time in the world.”
