CHAPTER 2: THE LETTER

Victoria's heart nearly stopped.

The letter trembled in her hands.

She read the final line again.

"If Lily finds you, it means they found me first."

The words felt heavier each time she looked at them.

The hotel lobby remained silent.

Guests watched from a distance.

No one knew exactly what was happening anymore.

But everyone could feel it.

Something far bigger than a family reunion was unfolding.

Victoria forced herself to keep reading.

Emily's handwriting filled several pages.

At first, the letter spoke about Lily.

Her favorite books.

Her love of drawing.

The way she laughed when nervous.

The little things only a mother notices.

Then the tone changed.

Eight years earlier, Emily had worked as an accountant for a charitable foundation.

A prestigious organization connected to several wealthy investors.

The foundation raised millions every year.

Publicly, it helped children.

Privately, something darker was happening.

Emily discovered money disappearing.

Huge amounts.

Millions of dollars redirected into hidden accounts.

When she reported it, she was told to stay quiet.

When she refused, everything in her life began to collapse.

Her apartment lease was canceled.

Her bank accounts were frozen.

Anonymous accusations appeared online.

Soon she was being investigated instead of the people she had exposed.

The final blow came when someone convinced Victoria that Emily had stolen money herself.

Victoria felt tears fill her eyes.

Because she remembered.

The scandal.

The headlines.

The accusations.

The arguments.

She remembered turning her back on her sister.

And now she realized she had been manipulated.

The crowd faded into the background as she reached the final page.

One sentence was circled twice.

"The man behind everything is named Richard Graves."

Victoria froze.

Richard Graves.

Her chief financial officer.

A man who had worked beside her for six years.

A man she trusted completely.

Slowly, she looked up.

Across the lobby stood Richard.

Perfect suit.

Perfect smile.

Perfect composure.

But his eyes looked different now.

Cold.

Calculating.

Dangerous.

He knew.

Victoria could see it instantly.

He knew exactly what was inside the letter.

And he knew Emily had finally told the truth.

Richard approached slowly.

"Victoria."

His voice remained calm.

Controlled.

"Let's discuss this privately."

The moment he spoke, Lily grabbed Victoria's hand.

Hard.

"No."

Victoria looked down.

Lily was shaking.

"That's him."

Silence.

"What?"

Lily pointed directly at Richard.

"Mommy was scared of him."

Several guests exchanged nervous glances.

Richard laughed softly.

"Victoria, this child doesn't know what she's saying."

But Victoria was no longer listening.

Because she suddenly remembered something.

Three years ago.

Emily had tried to contact her.

A single voicemail.

Victoria never received it.

Who managed her communications back then?

Richard.

The realization hit her like a truck.

How many messages had he intercepted?

How many lies had he told?

How much had he stolen?

Richard seemed to recognize the shift in her expression.

For the first time, his confidence slipped.

Just slightly.

"Victoria."

She stood.

"No."

The single word echoed through the lobby.

Richard stopped walking.

Victoria folded Emily's letter carefully.

Then handed it to the security guard.

"Call the police."

Richard's face immediately hardened.

"That's a mistake."

Victoria stepped in front of Lily.

Protective.

Determined.

"No."

She stared directly at him.

"Trusting you was the mistake."

For a brief moment, nobody moved.

Then Richard smiled.

Not his professional smile.

Not his friendly smile.

Something colder.

Something frightening.

"Then we're out of time."

The words sent chills through Victoria.

Before anyone understood what he meant, Richard turned and ran toward the hotel's private elevators.

The lobby erupted into chaos.

Guests screamed.

Security rushed forward.

But Richard was fast.

Too fast.

The elevator doors closed.

And he disappeared.

Moments later, Victoria's phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered immediately.

Richard's voice filled the line.

"You should have stayed out of this."

Victoria's grip tightened.

"What did you do to my sister?"

Silence.

Then came a chilling reply.

"I didn't kill Emily."

A pause.

"But the people I work for did."

The call disconnected.

Victoria stared at the screen.

Frozen.

Because this was no longer about stolen money.

This was murder.

And somewhere in New York, the people responsible were already trying to cover their tracks.

But this time, Emily's daughter had survived.

May you like

And Victoria intended to finish what her sister started.

No matter who stood in her way.
