Chapter 6 - A New Dawn

Six months later.
The Grand Opening of Sweet Relief on Michigan Avenue was the talk of Chicago.
The bakery smelled of fresh vanilla, toasted almonds, and artisanal espresso. Sunlight streamed through the pristine glass windows, illuminating the gleaming marble display cases filled with delicate pastries, artisan breads, and custom-designed wedding cakes.
Outside, a sleek black town car pulled quietly to the curb.
Vincent and Isabella Romano stepped out onto the sidewalk, walking hand in hand into the warm, bustling shop. Vincent wore a tailored charcoal overcoat, completely relaxed, the dark cloud of grief and suspicion that had haunted him for two years entirely gone. Isabella wore a cream-colored silk scarf, laughing softly as they stepped inside.
Lydia stood behind the counter, wearing a clean white apron, expertly plating a tray of fresh croissants. When she saw them enter, her face lit up with a bright, welcoming smile.
“Good morning, Mr. and Mrs. Romano,” Lydia greeted cheerfully as they approached the counter. “What can I get you today?”
Vincent leaned against the counter, a faint, genuine smile touching his lips.
“Just a black coffee, Lydia,” Vincent said smoothly. “And whatever your best pastry is. Isabella says your chocolate brioche is legendary.”
“It is,” Isabella confirmed, resting her hand on Vincent’s arm, her eyes shining with happiness. “Though I think we’re mostly here just to see how well our favorite baker is running her empire.”
“Better than the mafia, that’s for sure,” Lydia laughed, sliding a ceramic mug and a warm pastry across the counter. “No shootouts, no syndicate wars, and nobody screaming across the dining room.”
Vincent chuckled, taking a sip of his coffee. He looked around the thriving, sunlit bakery—at the laughing customers, the warm wooden decor, and the incredible success Lydia had built with her own hands, supported by a debt-free foundation.
The past was buried. The traitors were locked away. The queen had returned to her rightful place, and a brave, exhausted waitress who had once worn a sapphire necklace to survive had found her own kingdom in the light.
Vincent raised his coffee cup in a silent toast to Lydia.

“To new beginnings,” Vincent said quietly.
“To new beginnings,” Lydia smiled back, raising her mug in return as the morning sun warmed the entire room.
