Chapter 5 - The War on the WaterfrontAt midnight, the rain over New York turned into a driving storm.

In the private underground warehouse at Pier 42—Julian Vance’s primary distribution hub for the tri-state area—forty men stood guard around millions of dollars worth of contraband.
Julian Vance sat in an glass-enclosed office on the second-floor gantry, sipping brandy, waiting for Dr. Bennett’s phone call confirming that the Vale heir was dead.
The call never came.
Instead, at 12:15 AM, the massive corrugated steel doors of the warehouse were blown inward by four simultaneous shaped charges.
The deafening explosion rattled the concrete floor. Smoke and fire poured into the building as twelve black tactical SUVs tore through the ruined entrance, tearing through the perimeter defense.
Dante Moretti’s private security team—led by Mercer—deployed with military precision, flanking Vance’s men before they could draw their weapons.
And walking through the center of the smoke, completely unbothered by the gunfire ringing out around him, was Adrian Vale.
He wore a dark coat, holding an automatic shotgun in his hands.
Beside him walked Marco and Paul, firing with deadly accuracy, clearing a path directly toward the gantry stairs.
In his office above, Vance dropped his glass of brandy. The dark amber liquid spilled across his white leather sofa.
“How?” Vance screamed, grabbing his radio. “How did he get through the perimeter security?”
The radio crackled with static. “Boss! Bennett sang! He gave them the codes! He gave them everything!”
Vance turned to run toward his private rear elevator, but before he could touch the button, the glass wall of his office shattered into ten thousand pieces.
Adrian Vale stepped through the broken frame, his shotgun resting casually against his hip.
Vance backed away, his hands raised, his face pale as chalk. “Adrian... listen to me... we can make a deal! The docks... you can have the northern docks! I’ll give you seventy percent of the shipping revenue!”
Adrian walked slowly toward him.
“You gave my wife poisoned medicine, Julian,” Adrian said softly.
Vance gasped. “It... it was business! It was just business!”
“No,” Adrian said, stopping three feet from him. “Business is money. Business is territory. What you did... was evil.”
Adrian racked the slide of his shotgun.
“And today,” Adrian whispered, “your men put a hand on Hannah Brooks.”
Vance’s eyes widened in sheer, utter confusion. “Who? The... the baker?”
“She is the woman who saved my family,” Adrian said.
Outside the warehouse, the storm raged on. But inside the office, three sharp shots echoed out over the pier, signaling the absolute, total destruction of the Vance syndicate.
Two hours later.
The black SUV pulled into the driveway of the Vale estate.
Adrian walked through the front doors. He was tired, his clothes wet from the rain, but the dark, crushing weight that had sat on his shoulders for months was gone.
He went upstairs to the nursery.
Hannah was sitting in the leather rocking chair, holding Lucas, who was peacefully sleeping after his late-night feeding. She had a soft bandage over her cheekbone, but her hazel eyes were bright and alert as she saw him enter.
Adrian walked over and knelt beside her chair.
He took her small hand in his, pressing his lips gently against her knuckles.
“It’s over, Hannah,” Adrian whispered. “Vance is gone. Bennett is in federal custody. My family is safe.”
Hannah looked down at his handsome, battle-weary face. She reached out with her free hand, gently running her fingers through his dark, damp hair.

“You came back,” she whispered.
“I will always come back to you,” Adrian said softly, looking up into her eyes with a raw, undeniable devotion. “Both of you.”
