Chapter 4 - Pier 42

The rain had begun to fall in heavy, slanting sheets across the Brooklyn waterfront, turning the asphalt black and slick. The old Fulton fish market docks were deserted at this hour, a sprawling labyrinth of rusted corrugated metal, rotting wooden piers, and towering shipping containers stacked four high against the dark, churning waters of the East River.

The black Mercedes pulled up behind a row of stacked cargo containers without its headlights.

Adrian stepped out into the freezing downpour, not bothering with an umbrella. His charcoal overcoat billowed behind him in the wind. Behind him, two unmarked sedans slid silently to a halt, disgorging six men in tactical gear led by Nick Caruso.

“The tip said container H-412,” Nick shouted over the roar of the wind and the crashing waves against the concrete pilings. “Third tier up, near the edge of the pier. It’s a dry box, but it’s welded shut.”

“Get the hydraulic cutters,” Adrian ordered, his eyes scanning the shadows between the rusted stacks. “And watch the perimeter. Salvatore knew we’d trace the key. He’s expecting us.”

Before Nick could signal the team, the beam of a high-intensity spotlight flared to life from the top of an adjacent gantry crane, blindingly bright against the dark rain.

A voice echoed across the pier through an amplified speaker system, dripping with oily amusement.

“Well, well. Look who decided to show up for a midnight stroll.”

From behind a stack of green shipping containers stepped Salvatore Romano. He was a bulky man in an expensive cashmere overcoat, flanked by four armed enforcers holding automatic shotguns. Behind Salvatore stood two other men holding heavy steel chains attached to a reinforced wire-mesh cage.

Inside the cage, half-submerged in the shadows, a massive gray-black form stirred.

“Bruno!” Adrian called out, his voice cutting through the wind.

A low, gravelly rumble—a familiar, deep vibration that Adrian would recognize anywhere—echoed from inside the cage.

Salvatore smiled, his teeth gleaming wetly in the spotlight. “Easy, Moretti. Don't make any sudden movements. That old beast is heavily sedated, but if my boys get nervous, they might just give him another dose. Permanent this time.”

Adrian didn't flinch. He took two slow steps forward into the glare of the spotlight, his hands empty and loose at his sides.

“You made a mistake taking the dog, Salvatore,” Adrian said calmly.

“A mistake?” Salvatore laughed, spreading his arms wide. “Look around you, boy! You walked right into a trap because of a mutt! Your fiancée gave us every ledger entry, every route schedule, and every backdoor code you own. By tomorrow morning, Moretti Freight will be a subsidiary of Romano Holdings, and you’ll be lucky if we let you run a fruit stand in Little Italy.”

“Vivian gave you the ledgers,” Adrian acknowledged, his voice terrifyingly steady. “She gave you the routes. She gave you the security codes. But did she tell you what Resta means?”

Salvatore paused, his smile faltering slightly. “What are you talking about?”

“My mother told me those words before she died,” Adrian said, taking another step forward. “In Italian, it means Stay human. I forgot the second half for a long time. I let myself become a monster so people would never hurt me again.”

Adrian’s eyes locked onto Salvatore’s.

“Then I found Bruno. And he reminded me what loyalty actually looks like.”

Salvatore sneered, raising his hand toward the men holding the cage. “Enough of this sentimental garbage. Drop your weapon, Moretti—drop the gun you’ve got tucked in your belt, or the dog goes into the harbor right now.”

Adrian reached beneath his overcoat.

He didn't pull out a gun.

He pulled out his phone, tapped the screen twice, and pressed speaker.

The audio broadcast echoed across the pier through a hidden Bluetooth speaker system Nick had planted inside the gantry crane:

“...She gave us every ledger entry, every route schedule, and every backdoor code you own. By tomorrow morning, Moretti Freight will be a subsidiary of Romano Holdings...”

Salvatore froze. His face went chalk white. “What is that? Turn that off!”

“It’s being broadcast live to the federal prosecutor’s office in Manhattan,” Adrian said smoothly, checking his watch. “Along with the encrypted financial transfer records from your shell companies to Vivian’s Swiss bank accounts, and the raw server logs of your men trespassing on my estate three nights ago.”

One of Salvatore’s enforcers panicked, leveling his shotgun toward Adrian. “Boss, he’s recording us! Shoot him!”

Before the enforcer’s finger could twitch on the trigger, a suppressive crack split the night air from above.
